NOTES
1). In 1850 he owned Palo Alto Farm on Monkton Road, about one and one half miles east of York Road, Monkton, Baltimore County, MD. The house was of wood frame, four stories high, with two rooms on each floor. It was about 75 yards off of the road on the northeast side, between Blue Mount and Piney Hill Roads. The property was higher near the road, so only the top floors could be seen from Monkton Road. It was close to the Gunpowder River. This Monkton Road property adjoined the Ellis P. Horn property. Francis Corcoran, one of Patrick s sons was employed by Mr. Horn in the 1850 Census. This was sold to John Bacon. He later sold to Henry Snow, a food wholesaler. Patrick sold the farm to the Fridinger s, who in turn sold it to Charles Garrett. The Fridinger s moved across the street to the McBride farm, which they later sold to the Ledbetter s. After selling the farm, Patrick moved the family to Baltimore City. By 1860 he is listed in the Baltimore City Directory as the proprietor of the Bull s Head Tavern at 132 N. Front Street, near Gay Street and Belair Market. His son, Christopher was listed as the Barkeeper. It evidently was also a boarding house and hotel. He sold it sometime before 1863, because new owners, Tracey & Stansbury, are listed then. The price was $600. Shortly after the sale, Patrick disappeared, never to be heard from again. Some in the family felt that he had met with foul play, while others thought he may have enlisted in the Civil War and was either killed or settled elsewhere after the war. The 1850 Census for Baltimore County, MD District 7 Monkton, Monkton Hereford Road shows Patrick as a laborer , born in 1812. The 1860 Census for Baltimore City, MD Ward 8, shows him as proprietor of a Boarding House, with a value of $200, and born in 1809. The 1870 Census Baltimore City, MD, Ward 4 Roll 573, Page 33 shows him as being born in 1818. In the 1860 Census, one of his boarders was William H. Watson, a tinner , born 1833, who later married his daughter, Mary Ann Corcoran. Another boarder was Charles Davis, an upholsterer, born 1818, who later married his daughter, Ellen Corcoran.
2). Her daughter, Mary Ann Corcoran Watson s death certificate states that her mother, Catherine Montague, was born in France. But Catherine s death certificate says she was born in Ireland, and was a residnet of Baltimore City, MD for 60 years. Since her son and daughter, Francis and Frances, were born at sea in 1836, according to the 1850 Census, she evidently was a resident only 57 years. She was living at 1229 Maryland Avenue, Baltimore City, with her daughter, Ellen Davis, at the time of her death. She was said to be the daughter of a wealthy land owner in County Meath, Ireland, who was engaged to be married. She eloped with Patrick Corcoran, the caretaker s son, shortly before her scheduled marriage.
