NOTES
1). The legend that Cornelius was of royal descent and the second legendthat he immigrated from Loch Lomond both originated in the1920sthrough the fanciful imaginations of descendants and the avariceof unscrupulous genealogists. Thus both of these claims were madeabout the second Cornelius in America the existence of the originalCornelius was unknown to J. Montgomery Seaver who published THE KEITHGENEALOGY in Philadelphia in 1930. While nothing definitive can be said about Cornelius because of anyrelationship to either of the clergymen James Keith, it is interestingthat these early settlers who came from the Keith clan territories ofNortheastern Scotland were neither Church of Scotland Presbyterian nor Roman Catholics like the majority of the populace, but were Church of England, although one was a Puritan dissenter . Itis noteworthy that Cornelius also belonged to the Church of Englandand indeed served as a Lay Reader when he moved to Brunswick County. See Se aver. Bishop Mead, OLD CHURCHES, MINISTERS ANDFAMILIES OF VIRGINIA, Vol. II, p. 216. St. John s Henrico County,Vestry Records, 1730 1773. Keith Family Genealogical Chart. Writof Execution Goods and Chattels of James Keith Prince WilliamCounty, 5 August 175 8? . The latter three manuscripts in theVirginia State Archives. John M Keith. Jr manuscript. 1987
