1). 18401.ged Biedler Family Genealogy, p. 265, has his photograph. Veterinary surgeon and farmer. Mr. Riter, Quaker Mrs. Riter, Presbyterian. Children Arthur, Benjamin, Lizzie. Children s names not entered in database as nothing is known of them otherwise. Mr. Riter moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in the spring of 1846, and lived in the city during the Mormon war and exodus from the city. He served as city marshal two terms 1853 1854 and was deputy sheriff of Hancock County, IL, from 18541856. He was a staunch Democrat and took an active part in local politics He also served as assessor of Appanoose township seventeen years in succession In 1892 he was stricken with paralysis, and while unable to help himself much, he cheerfully bore his burden until death came to his release. His photo on page 265 not available here shows he looked life his half sister, Mary Ann Downing. His brother, Joseph, looked exactly like the father, Benjamin Riter. 2). Downing.ged Obituary of Hannah Margaret Cosgrove Riter Hannah Margaret, the daughter of Warrick M. and Hannah M. Cosgrove was born April 19, 1836, in the state of Pennsylvania. She came west with her parents t Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1848 and made her home in the locality for the remainder o her life. On December 25, 1855, she was united in marriage to Charles C. Riter, who preceded her in death March 16, 1899. To this union were born three children Arthur S., who departed this life May 11, 1882, Benjamin W. of Dallas City, IL, and Lizzie M. Ferguson with whome she made her home until the time of her death November 18, 1919, after which time she was taken to the Union Benevolent Home at Keokuk, OA, where she remained until stricken with a stroke of apoplexy the 26th of April. Later she was removed to the Sacred Heart hospital at Fort Madison, IA, where she passed away January 2, 1922, at 5 40 am., at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 13 days. She leaves to mourn her death one sister, Mrs. Maude Parham, of St. Louis, MO, one son, Benjamin of Dallas City, one son in law, F. C. Ferguson of Niota, nine grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. Mrs. Riter was a member of the Appanose Presbyterian church. The remains were taken to the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lulu Liskey, in Pontoosue township, where the services were held at 11 o clock, Thursday, January 5, 1922. Interment in the Tull cemetery.
