NOTES
1). BIOGRAPHY Joel remained on his father s farm until September 1862, when he enlisted as a chaplain in the 53rd Mass. Volunteers. He was in the Department of the Gulf and was in two battles and was wounded at the Battle of Fort Hudson inJanuary 1863. Promoted to Major just before that battle. He moved after marriage to Reading, Kansas and was also in the Mass. Legislature in 1864.
