NOTES
1). Henry Laurens, b. Charleston, S. C., Mar. 6, 1724, d. Dec . 8, 1792, was a leading patriot during the American Revolu tion. A South Carolina merchant and planter, he was preside nt of the Second Continental Congress from November 1777 un til December 1778. In 1780 he was captured by the Britis h while on his way to negotiate an agreement between the Un ited States and Holland. The revelation of his mission le d to war between Britain and the Dutch. After being impris oned in the Tower of London, Laurens was exchanged in 178 2 for General CORNWALLIS.
