1). DRAYTON Charles Uncle of John Drayton cousin of Thomas F enwick Drayton , Senator from Parish of St Andrew. Born December 23, 1743, in Charleston District, the so n of Dr. John Drayton, Jr, and Charlotte Bull. Graduated fr om Edinburgh University, Scotland, M.D., 1770. Physician an d large planter of Charles Town and Drayton Hall plantati on. Married Esther Middleton, daughter of Henry Middleton 1717 84 , February 24, 1774. During Revolutionary War, capt ain of volunteers also supplied provisions. Commissioner t o maintain free drain from Long Savannah, 1785. Justice o f quorurn. S. C. House of Representatives, St. Andrews, 178 5 resigned on election as Lieutenant Governor on Februar y 11, 1785 because of indisposition, did not qualify unt il March 22, 1785 , serving until 1787. S. C. House of Repr esentatives St Andrew s, 1787 92. S. C. Senate, St· Andrew s, 1792 96, 1797 1800. Delegate to state convention to rati fy Federal Constitution, 1788. Pre eminently known as a bot anist and artist. Died August 11, 1820 buried In Charlesto n District.
