Educated at home an d in England. Planter, of The Oaks plantation and of Barb ados. Married, first, Mary Williams, in 1741 second, Mari a Henrietta Bull third, Lady MaryMackenzie, widow of Joh n Ainslie, January 18, 1776. Acquired Middleton Place thr ough his first wife laid out worId famous gardens there o wned almost 20 plantations, 50, 000 acres, 800 slaves. Cred ited with raising and supporting an entire regiment to figh t in the Revolutionary War. Died June 13, 1784 in Charlesto n buried behind the chancel of St. James Parish Church, B erkeley.
