1). Charles Pinckney was a British colonial lawyer and adminis trator, and father of Charles Cotesworth and Thomas Pinckne y. He was a successful lawyer and widower when he married E lizabeth Lucas, mother of his two sons and heiress to plant ation lands in South Carolina. With his wife, he worked t o encourage Indigo cultivation in the colony. He was fo r a short time 1752 chief justice of South Carolina. In 1 753, he was appointed agent for the colony in London.
