William Elliott, bricklayer, immigrated to South Carolina in the 1680s and was in the province by 23 January l690 when h e was the executor of an estate. Like his brother Thomas, h e became a planter and a large landowner. Between 1695 an d 1711 he obtained grants for at least 5,327 acres on the S tono River in Berkeley and Colleton counties and a lot in C harleston he also purchased Accabee, a 365 plantation on C harleston Neck, and a 100 acre tract at Hobcaw. Thomas Elli ott was associated with the Charleston Quaker Meeting, bu t William was a Baptist. Initially he was a member of the A ntipedo Baptist Church in Charleston and gave the church lo t 62 in the city. Although he later claimed to have bee n a General Arian Baptist before he left England, his Ari anism did not surface until about 1730 when he was suspende d from the Antipedo Baptist Church. His son William share d his beliefs and led a group that seceded from the Antiped o Baptist Church and formed the General Arian Baptist Chu rch in Charleston. In his will, the elder Elliott bequeathe d £10, 00 and 151 4 acres of land to the General Baptist C hurch. Elliott served nine terms in the Commons House. He r epresented Berkeley and Craven counties in the Fourth l698 1699 , Fifth 1700 1702 , Tenth 1707 1708 , and Fifteent h 1716 1717 Assemblies St. Andrew Parish in the Fourth 1728 , Ninth 1731 1733 , and eleventh 1733 1736 Royal A ssemblies and was a member of the Ninth 1707 and Sevente enth 1720 1721 Assemblies. As a member of the Fifteenth A ssembly, he signed a petition requesting that South Carolin a be made a royal province. Among his other offices were ta x assessor for the Charleston Neck area 1703 road commis sioner 1703 and Commissioner of the High roads for St. A ndrew Parish 1721 .
