GAILLARD, John, uncle of Theodore Gaillard Hunt , a Senat or from South Carolina born in St. Stephens District, S.C. , September 5, 1765 educated for the legal profession in E ngland member, State house of representatives 1794 1796 m ember, State senate 1796 1804, serving as president 1803 18 04 elected as a Republican to the United States Senate i n 1804 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Pie rce Butler reelected in 1806, 1812, 1818, and 1824 and ser ved from December 6, 1804, until his death on February 26 , 1826 served as President pro tempore of the Senate durin g the Eleventh and Thirteenth through Nineteenth Congresses died in Washington, D.C. interment in the Congressiona l Cemetery.
