2). ROCHELLE HARRISON FAMI LIES John Alfred Ross, my great grandfather, was the son of Jame s W. Ross and Sarah E. J. Rochelle. Sarah s parents were An derson Rochelle and Nancy Ann Harrison, as proven by thei r wills in Ferry County, Alabama, recorded in 1842 and 1846 . 2 Anderson and Nancy Rochelles moved to Ferry County, Al abama, from Kershaw County, South Carolina, about 1837 38 w ith their son Dr. James Harrison Rochelle and their daughte rs Sarah and Mary. Sarah and James W. Ross had two childre n born in South Carolina, and Mary Rochelle and her husban d Thomas Bryant had none. Dr. James H. Rochelle died in 184 0. After Anderson and Nancy Rochelle, James Ross, and Thoma s Bryant died in Perry County, the sisters Sarah Ross and Mary Bryant moved with t heir children to Union Parish, Louisiana.3 The Ross and Roc helle families were wealthy planters. The 1850 U.S. Slave C ensus for Perry County listed 50 slaves owned by the wido w Sarah Rochelle Ross, by name, color, and age. Anderson Rochelle was the son of James Rochelle born c a 1750 and wife Margaret Evans born ca 1760 . James Roche lle was the son of John Rochelle and Elizabeth Boone, who m arried by 1748 in Virginia or North Carolina. John Rochelle s father was James Rochelle. James Rochelle, Sr., was th e son of George? Ralph? Rochelle. The Rochelles were French Huguenots who emigrated to Vir ginia by 1668. The town of La Rochelle, France, had a cit y wall around it. King Huguenot, who lived in the 14th cent ury, had the city gate covered by an arch commemorating hi s life and deeds. The Presbyterians held their revival meet ings under his gate, and the Catholics would not bother the m, since they thought that old King Huguenot s spirit walke d on this gate at night. For this reason, all Protestants w ere called by Catholics, Huguenots.
