Born June 22, 1766, at Drayton Hall plantation, the so n of Chief Justice William Henry Drayton and Dorothy Golightly, Attended schoo l in Charleston Dr. Witherspoon s academy at Princeton, N . J. the College Of New Jersey now Princeton University , August October, 1779 the Inner Temp le in London, England read law in Charleston under Genera l Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and admitted to S. C. Bar i n 1788. Lawyer, in Charleston, 1788 94. Warden of Charlesto n, 1788. Married Hester Rose Tidyman October 6, 1794. Ric e planter from 1794 until death. Captain of Cadet Infantr y , volunteers, in French Revolution. Member of constitutio nal Convention of 1790. S. C. House of Representatives, St . Philip s and St. Michael s, 1792 96, 1798 1800. Lieuten ant Governor, 1798 1800 succeeded as Governor January 25 , 1800, on death of Governor Edward Rutledge. Elected Gover nor December 4, 1800 serving until 1802. Intendant of Charl eston, 1803 04. S. C, Senate, St. Philip s and St. Michael s, 1805 08 resigned on election as Governor December 7, 18 08, serving until 1810. Appointed U. S. District Judge Ma y 7, 1812. Trustee South Carolina College, 1801 02, 1808 10. Honorary LL.D., S outh Carolina College, 1807. Author of A View of South Caro lina, 1802 Memoirs of the American Revolution, including t he life of Chief Justice Drayton, 1821 Letters Written Dur ing a Tour Through the Northern and Eastern States, 1794, a nd other works. Elected to Royal Society of Sciences of Goe ttingen, Germany, in 1804 on basis of A View of South Carol ina. Died November 27, 1822 in office as district judge, i n Charleston buried in Charleston District.
