Urged by his Presbytery to accept a call made out for hi m there that year he declined. After mission work for some four years, his Synod, Ma y 3, 1820, appointed him to go to Nova Scotia, Canada or t he States of America. Landing at Halifax, N. This he declined, and landing at New York, passed int o the Philadelphia Presbytery Associate and was ordaine d by this court December 7, 1820. During that winter, we i nfer, he supplied New Lebanon, West Virginia, end Shiloh, L ancaster Co., S. C., as calls were presented from both thes e charges in the spring of 1821. The latter was accepted a nd his installation occurred December 1821. His field Shil oh and Neely s Creed, was large, containing in 1821 one hun dred and twenty four families and two hundred and thirty me mbers. Having labored faithfully, he was led, March 28, 18 32, to decline the authority of the Associate Synod becaus e of her recent act on slavery. After negotiations with th e First Presbytery, he and his Shiloh charge, Neely s Cree k declining, were admitted into the A. R. P. Church, Apri l 7, 1834. About 1840 he began stated supply of Winnsboro , Fairfield County, S.C., and Perry s Church, Lancaster Co , S. C. Installed pastor of the former March 8, 1844, hi s official connection ceased April 20, 1852. Removing fro m thence to Cleveland County, N. C., he preached at Knob Cr eek and other points. Here, while preparing a sermon he wa s smitten with a fatal malady, Sept.26, 1855. His remain s were reinterred at Shiloh. Father Ketchen was twice marr ied, first to Miss Mary Mcilwaine, February 23, 1823. Fro m this union the following children were born Margaret, w ho died in infancy Ella who married James Cathcart and mov ed to Illinois in the 1850s Mary, who married Charlie Cath cart and likewise moved to Illinois. Tirzah, who married H enry Laurens Elliott Robert Simpson, who married Priscill a Boyd, William Witherspoon, who married Hattie McMaster J ames Cathcart, who was killed in the Civil War. His secon d marriage was to Miss Margaret Beaty on August 17, 1841. T hough well indoctrinated and mighty in the Scriptures, hi s forte, says Dr. James Boyce, Was at the head of the comm union table where he seemed to lay out his whole power. I t was wonderful to see the power with which he expatiated u pon a Saviour s love, to witness the fluency and animated d eclaration with which his enkindled mind discharged itsel f upon the communicants seated at the table before him an d upon a delightful audience. When we saw that countenanc e kindled up with expressiveness and love to Christ, and hi m crucified, together with his promises portrayed to his p eople, we were tempted to think that whatever the Lord s t able and the sacramental occasion may have been to other s under his administration they were to him a Bethel, the h ouse of God and the gate of heaven
