1). MIDDLETON, Henry Son of Arthur Middleton grandson of Hen ry Middleton, 1717 1784 father of John Izard Middletonne phew of Thomas Middleton , Senator from Parishes of St. Phi lip and St. Michael. Born September 28, 1770, in London, En gland, while his parents were traveling abroad, the son o f Arthur Middleton and Mary Izard. Brought to South Carolina in 1771 . Educated in classical studies under tutors at Middleto n Place studied in England and Francereturned to Sout h Carolina in 1787 after his father s death. Returned to En gland and resided at Clifton, Gloucester shire. Married, a t Bath, England, Mary Helen Hering, of Heybridge Hall, Engl and, November 13, 1794. Returned to Charleston in 1800. Pla nter of Middleton Place planted first camellias. Inherit ed estate at Newport, R. I. social leader there. S. C. Hou se of Representatives, St. Philip s and St. Michael s, 1802 10. S.C. Senate, St. Philips and St. Michael s, 1810 res igned on election as Governor in December, 1810, serving un til 1812. Elected to 14th and 15th Congresses, serving Marc h 4, 1815, to March 3, 1819. Minister to Russia April 6, 18 20, to August 3, 1830. Trustee of South Carolina College, 1 810 12. Vice president of Union Convention, 1833. Delegat e from St. George s Episcopal Church, Dorchester, to dioces an convention, 1809. Died in Charleston June 14, 1848 buri ed in family mausoleum at Middleton Place.
