1). LAWTON, Benamin William Nephew of Alexander James Lawton cousin of Winborn Lawton, Joseph Maner Lawton, and Winsto n Alven Lawton , Senator from Barnwell District. Born September 22, 1822, in Black Swamp, Beaufort Di strict, the son of Joseph James Lawton of Old Allendale an d Phoebe Jane Messe. Graduated from Medical College of Sout h Carolina, 1843. Physician, of near Allendale, Barnwell Di strict. Married Josephine Barksdale Polhill November 21, 18 45. S.C. House of Representatives, Barnwell, 1850 52. Membe r of Secession Convention of 1860 62 and signer of Ordnanc e of Secession. S. C. Senate, Barnwell, 1862 68resigned to remove to Augusta, Ga., because home was burned . In Confederate War, organized and was captain of Compan y 13, Third Regiment of Cavalry, S.C. Volunteers. President of Miller Law on Insurance Company o f Augusts, Ga., 1866. In 1870, returned to Allendale and re sumed practice of medicine and farming. Mason, member of Al lendale Lodge No. 109. Member of Baptist Church. Died at co untry home in Barnwell County August 5, 1879 buried in ol d Smyrna Baptist Churchyard in what is now Allendale County.
