NOTES

1). In 1436, Eric XIII reigned in Denmark over Sweden and Norw ay. He was deposed by his nobles for cruelty, but was reins tated, with one condition being the appointment of Charle s Knutson as Viceroy of Sweden. Eric was again deposed in 1 439, and fled to Gothland, Finland, and eventually sought r efuge in Pomerania. His nephew Christopher of Bavaria, Coun t of Oldenburg, succeeded to the throne. Sweden and Norwa y could not unite under him, and the Swedes chose Charles or Karl Knutson to be their king as Charles VIII. He was e lected by the Swedish Wigan parliament in 1457. Charles V III was so violently opposed by the Archbishop that he fle d to Danzig. Christian I of Denmark became king, but Charle s Knutson was reinstated in 1464. He was again deposed an d reinstated, then ruled until his death in 1470. Charles Harrold Knutson was the great grandson of Charle s Knutson, who was Charles VIII of Sweden and Norway. He wa s exiled to France for political reasons, where he marrie d the daughter and heiress of Count Robin Gantier. Jean Ren e Knutson, son of Charles Harrold Knutson, was a Peer of th e Realm of France, and married Dorcas Daniel, the beautifu l daughter of a Jewish banker of Paris, who claimed descen t from the Prophet Daniel. Their son, Jean Jacques Knutson , came with his parents to America from La Rochelle, Franc e after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
