NOTES
1). An elderly gentleman on John s Island, Mr. John Free r, who was too old for army service, had remained neutral . As such he took protection from the British Crown and the n remained on John s Island as the protector of the ladie s and children left there, while their fathers and brothers , husbands and sons, were engaged in fighting for their co untry. Mr. Freer s first wife was Mr. Thomas Legare s sister , and a very warm friendship and affection existed betwee n these brothers in law all through their lives, though the ir opinions differed widely in some things. Mr. Free r believed it impossible for the Colonists to succeed in es tablishing their Independence, but his sympathies were enti rely with his oppressed countrymen. He had, at that tim e a large family by his second marriage, and his son, Charl es served in the American Army as soon as he was old enoug h to bear arms. Biographical Sketches of the Huguenot Solomon Legare by Mrs. Eliza C.K.Fludd pp.86 87 .
