O n p a g e 19 of Historical Sketch of the Founding of Sp ring fiel d , M assachusetts is found Most of those who c ame i n 16 3 6 wer e young unmarried men. Of the few who we re alr ead y ma rrie d and came with families, several wer e from W ale s or o f Wel sh descent, including Thomas Meni ch, Alexa nde r Edward s, an d Roger Prichard. In 1640, Sir Henry Smith was appointed governor of t h i s n e w jurisdiction of Connecticut Roger went with h i m t o Wet he rsfield. The First Century of the History o f S prin gfield , v ol 1, pp. 170174, states that Roger Pri char d wa s Colle cto r Officer in 1642, that he was allott ed fi ve ac res of l an d along the Agawam River on Februar y 23 , 1643 , allotte d anot her 23 acres on April 6, 1643 , an d again g iven an ex tra all otment in Large Meadow n ow Lo ngmeadow on May 7, 1 645. Rog er s son, Nathaniel , also o wned lan d in Large Mead ow als o called Wet Mead ow at th e time . T he record of th e Januar y 6, 1681, tow n meetin g states tha t Nathaniel Pric hard peti tioned th e Town Cou ncil to giv e him as much of t he pond i n Lon g Meadow a s lay against h is land. The petit ion was gr a nted. There were several Prichard families in Massachuset t s i n t h ese early years. Among them was Sgt. Willia m Pr icha rd w h o was born about 1602. It is likely that h e wa s Roge r s b ro ther per the following evidence. Roge r an d his sec ond wi fe , Elizabeth, died in 1671 and 1674 , res pectively . In 167 4 , their sons Joseph and Benjami n woul d have bee n 20 an d 1 6 years of age. It appears th at at b oth of the m had mov ed t o North Brookfield and we re livin g with the ir uncle Sgt . William. On August 2 , 1675, du ring King Ph ilips Wa r, Sgt . William, his so n Samuel, an d Roger s so n Joseph we re al l killed on th e same day dur ing an attac k by the Wimm eset I ndians. Th e probate recor ds of New Hav en for Josep h indicat e tha t Samuel Coley, S r., and Samue l Coley, Jr. , Joseph s u ncle and cousin o n his mother s side were ap pointe d t o administer his es tate and act a s guardians fo r Ben jamin w ho was then 18 . Joseph and Benj amin s mother , El izabeth, ha d a sister , Ann, the husban d of Samuel Cole y , Sr., and moth er of S amuel, Jr. A plaus ible reason th a t Benjamin suddenl y nee ded a guardian wa s that Sgt. Wi llia m Prichard had bee n h is guardian and u ncle . The name Prichard evolved from the Welsh patronymi c n a m e a p Richard or son of Richard. It was during th e rei g n o f Hen ry VIII 15091547 that the Welsh began c onvert i ng or bei ng converted? to the English style su rname . Fo r exa mple, i n the Fifth Edition of Burke s Lan ded Ge ntr y is th e lineag e of Prichard of Broseley hi s name wa s sp elled a p Richar d in the Averley Parish rec ords in 16 54. The parents of Roger Prichard or his wife, Frances, h a v e n o t been determined. A search to this end by the So ci et y o f G enealogists in London found some interestin g inf orm atio n ab out Prichard families but no definitiv e ances tors . How ever , for the purposes of speculation , the Will iam P richar d Lin eage, recorded in Landed Gent ry, include s Ri chard a p Jenk ins, Lord of Llanover, ma rried Anne t he daug hter o f Willia m ap John ap Roger.T heir eldest s on was n amed Wi lliam bu t the names of thei r other sons w ere not g iven. I t is not u nreasonable tha t another son w as named R oger. Th is is the o nly Prichar d family found t o have an a ncestor n amed Roger. Source Walter Gilbert Genealogy
