NOTES
1). Faulty rationale begets faulty Tradition. And that s w h a t happened here. However sincere, the faulty WIT T T radi t io n can be traced back to Year Book No. 1,da te d 1924 , o f t he Huguenot Society of the Founders of Ma nak in in t he C olon y of Virginia. THE OLD WITT TRADITION WAS FLAWED IN THREE MAIN AREAS 1. William Witt d1754 was not the immigrant but so n o f J o h n Witt and wife Ann Daux and William Witt wa s no t bo r n i n Southern France but in Charles City CoV A in o rde r t o b e with his parents . 2. John Witt was the immigrant and he was import e d a s a h eadright plantation owner paid his way fr o m Engl and, n o t France per Land Patent records . 3. Five sons attributed to William Witt d1754 Lewis , C h a r les, William, Abner, and David were not his son s bu t h i s gr andsons. a. Lewis & Charles were sons of Benj. Witt d1774 of Bu c k i n gham CoVA b. William, Abner, and David were sons o f J o h n Wi tt d1782 of Amherst CoVA QUOTING FROM FAULTY RATIONALE IN HUGUENOT BOOK NO. 1 In 1756, Land Deed of Prince Edward Co., VA of Benj a m i n W itt son of William d1754 , have as witnesses th e n am e s o f his brothers, Charles Witt and Lewis Witt. And in 1781, Amherst Co., will of John Witt Sr. s o n o f W illiam d1754 , his brothers William Witt Jr., A bn e r Wit t, a nd David Witt are witnesses The first known entry for William Witt d1754 and h i s b r o ther John Witt d ca 1751 was in 1715, when the y b oug h t j ointly 300 acres known as Young Mens Adve ntur e f ro m Cha rles Hudson in Henrico Co that part no w Gooc hlan d Co . Th e deed said that the WITT brothers w ere fro m Cha rle s City C oVA, the county of residence fo r the imm igran t Joh n Wit t & wife Ann Daux per Charles C ity Count y cour t recor ds. No reason to believe that William Witt d1754 and h i s b r o ther John Witt, Jr d before 1751 came from Engl an d. Every reason to believe that they were sons of immig r a n t J ohn Witt Whitt and Ann Daux who were married aft e r 16 7 0 i n Charles City CoVA, per court records. Furthe r , impo rt atio n of John Witt to the Charles City Count y ar ea supp ort ed b y Land Patents. No documentation to support the old Witt tradition w h i c h h as been published in books, such as 1. Vol. IV, Compendium of American Genealogy, by Virkus. 2. Vol. 2, Virginia Soldiers of 1776, by Burgess 3. Year Book No. 1 published in 1924 by The Huguenot S o c i e ty Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia. By tradition, this Richard Witt Whitt was named Rich a r d O n ey Witt. By tradition, he was left on doorstep o f W il lia m W itt D1754 of Charles City, Goochland and Alb emar l e coun ties , VA. There is no documentation or assoc iati o n with Wi llia m Witt d1754 to support this adoptio n tr ad ition. Wayne W. Bates TRADITION VS. DOCUMENTED FACT Excerpt from letter, dated 12 April 1988, to Wayne W i t t B a tes from Mrs. John Inman Bell, Honorary Nationa l Pr es ide n t of The Huguenot Society of the Founders o f Manak i n In t h e Colony of Virginia. As I mentioned, I feel that giving attention to th e e a r l y WITT family, addressing the problems of traditi on v s . d oc umented facts, and what the evidence now poin ts t o , wil l ma ke a valuable contribution to the early h isto r y and ge nealo gy of the WITT family. Surely, we al l wan t t o know th e trut h, and the Society is anxious t o hav e it s records co ncernin g all of our Huguenot famil ies co rrect , well docume nted, an d in good order. Again , I tha nk yo u for the contr ibution y ou are making not o nly to t he WIT T descendants bu t to the S ociety as a who le. I hop e we wi ll have the oppor tunity of m eeting at o ne of ou r own Hugu enot gatherings so metime. Signed Rose, Mrs. John I. Bell, Jr. Honorary Natio n a l P r esident
