M a r r i ed Mariae, daughter of William Ruige, Yeoman of Hay l e y a n d Witney, by whom he hadseveral children, includi ng Anne, baptised at Witney, 23rd Jany., 1561. Henry, bap t i s e d at Witney, 4th June, 1570. George, apprentised i n 1 5 9 8 t o Raphaell Warter, Cooper of London. From Chancery Proceedings now in the Record Office, Lo n d o n thefollowing is proved 1. Gregory Merriman, weaver of Witney, was son of Th o m a s M erriman, ofWitney. 2. He was married before 15 9 6 t o Ma ry , sister of William Ruige, Yeoman,of Witney . Br ie f Summa r y of Chancery Proceedings. Complaint dated 7 May 1596. About 40 years ago 1560 Pts was seized of two mess o r t e n s and a closein Witney which he mortgaged to h is b roth e r i n law William Ruige for 40markes paying int eres t o f 1 8 sill ings yearly. Pts says this property wa s set tle d o n his wife for life. He claims possession o f prope rt y at a ny time o n paying off the mortage. Reply dated 8 May 1596. Deft states that he purchased the ppty from the P t s f o r goodconsideration about 2 July 1557 8 and tha t Pt s ref er s to other ppty Page8. which was only leasehold and belonged to one, Richard N e w m a n, who about1550 demised it to Thomas Merriman fat h e r o f th e Pts for a term of 21yearsaat a yearly ren t o f 1 8 sh illin gs. About September 1593 Deft required possession of o n e o f h i s houses thenoccupied by the Pts and allowe d t he P ts t o occupy one other of Defts houses in Hayle y a t th e ple asur e of the Deft Deft and his son Leonard Ruige then leased the house f o r m erly in theOcc of Pts to Robert Stevens of Abingd o n B er ks.
