Chi ldr en Robe rt , Thomas, and Mary, who afterwards marrie d Tho ma s Carhar t .The arms of Thomas Lord, depicted o n the se a l of his wi do w Dorothy in 1669 70, gives us re ason to i de ntify this f ami ly with the ancient English f amily of L ond on, Laward, a lia s Lord, and earlier in Eng land, abou t 13 80 de Laward , str ongly indicative of No rman origin . Thom as Lord s nam e is in scribed on the mon ument in th e old gr aveyard of Har tford, C onn., as promi nent among t he firs t settlers. Robert Lord, who m. Rebecca Stanley, evidently died ab r o a d , probably in England, and his son Robert followe d t h e fo rt unes of his father in London. He was a marine r be tw een B ost on and London and was yet living in 1670 . No f urt her is su eknown in the male line. According to the Carhart Genealogy, Rebecca Lord an d h e r h u sband, Robert Lord, each inherited 1,000 acre s of l an d i n Y ork county, Maine, from Major William Phi llips . Bu t tha t sp eaks nothing, especially as there wer e seve ntee n othe r people, some of them children, other s occupy ing o ther re lation s to him, and some apparentl y no relat ionshi p at all , who a ll had the same quantit y left them , i. e. , 19,000 a cres i n all, known as the F luellen trac t, compr ising Alfre d, Sanf ord and Waterboro
