He left his fa mi l y , ou r grandmother, whose name was Elizabeth Howard , a n d fi ve sm all children of whom my mother was the sec on d ol dest , in En gland for a year so that he could esta bli s h a hom e in thi s country before he sent for them . I bel ie ve Uncl e Billy ma y have been the youngest of t he fiv e chi ldre n . I don t kn ow the definite part of E nglan d they a ctual ly came from a s I remember my mothe r sayin g her fath er mov ed about a grea t deal. However , she sai d her father s peop le lived in Live rpool and w ere seafar ing people an d that h er grandfatherp aternal was a se a captain. My mother was born in Runcorn, County of Cheshire , w h i c h I believe is close to Yorkshire. About the tim e o f t h e b ig fire in Chicago note 1871 , Grandfathe r Gera rd l ef t Ch icago and went to Newport, R.I. He sen t for h is fa mil y an d started to build a home for them t he day t hey sa iled . Th e house is still standing and i s located o ff Broa dwa y facin g Equality Park. He buil t a workshop n ext to t he h ouse an d I believe he did hi s own contractin g most o f th e time, sp ecializing in bui lding inside stai rcases . Howev er he buil t a number o f places in Newport , includ ing a lar ger house i nto whic h the family moved s everal ye ars afte r they went t o New port. I have seen th is house w hich I th ink is locat e d on a corner one stree t is Goul d St., an d I can t recal l the other. There wa s a very l arge famil y , a number of who m died in childhoo d. Grandmo ther Gera r d died when she wa s 49 and about te n years late r, prob abl y in 1901 Grandfathe r Gerard die d at the age o f 59. There is a large family lot in the Newport Cemetery w h e r e t hey and some of the children are buried, and a he ad st on e wi th the name of Gerard on it. This cemetery i s l oca te d nea r the thoroughfare which leads to the Newp or t Nava l H ospita l, and is just off the road. Uncle Jac k g ave aun t E dna th e deed before he died in case she mi gh t be inter este d as h e had a lot in the Oak Grove Cem eta ry in Fal l River . I thi nk Raymonds mother and Aun t Laur a are buri ed in Un cle Jack s lot in Oak Grove Cem etery . Aunt Margar et, anoth er sister , married Albert Lo ckwood , and lived i n Ocean Gro ve, Swanse a, Mass when s he died . She left tw o sons, Bill y Lockwood , who is marr ied an d lives in Morga n, New Jersey , and has t wo sons a nd a da ughter, and her y ounger son, Be rt, or Alber t wh o is stil l living in Ocea n Grove. Bert di d not marry a n d lives al one. Freddie Bur ns is still opera ting the ga s s tation o n Second Street of f Stafford Road, h er husba nd Herb ert , is still with Buffi ngton s Greenhouse . Ros e and Hel e n Burns live at 63 Bro w St., Fall River, M ass . John Bu rn s son. Newport, Rhode Island Directories for 1887 1892 hav e t h e f o llowing information William Gerard, with occupation as a stair builder , 8 3 W e s t Broadway, living at house at Fall River, Mass achu set t s . The 1890 directory shows him living at 13 S pruc e Str ee t , Newport, Rhode Island. The 1891 director y sho ws hi m ro om ing at 285 Thames Street in Newport an d the 1 892 di recto r y shows him rooming at 287 Thames St reet i n Newport.
