1). William, was the progenitor of all who have borne thi s s u r n ame in Hingham and vicinity. He came to New Engl an d i n 1 63 5, and early in the autumn of that year, he l oca te d in H ing ham with others who were passengers of th e sh i p he cam e in . July 3, 1636, he had a house lot o f fiv e a cres gran ted h im, on what is now South, nearl y opposi te W est Street . Th e lot was bounded east by Jo hn Winche ster , west by Wi llia m Buckland, and included w ithin it s limit s the estate t no w owned by heirs of th e late Eben ezer Gay , Esq. The s urnam e Hersey, or Hersy , is a ver y ancient o ne, and prob . of Fre nch origin, a s it appear s among the l ist of noblem en and ge ntlemen w ho went ove r to England wi th William th e Conqueror . I n Hingham it i s still one of t he more numero us of the s u rnames of th e early settlers a nd it has wel l represen ted t he indust rious as well as th e enterprisin g and inf luentia l portio n of the inhabitant s of the town . At th e time of t he tr ouble about the elec tion of office rs fo r the train ban d , 1644 1645, William H ersey was asses se d a heavy fine f o r supporting the view s of Rev. Peter H o bart and his fri ends and the family r ate towards th e ere ction of the n ew meet inghouse was th e largest bu t one upo n the list . He was un doubtedly a na tive of En gland., an d perhap s of Old Hingham. but the p lace an d date of hi s birt h have not as yet bee n definitel y asc ertained. Th e chri stian name of his wife w as Elizab eth . In his will , date d March 9, 1657 58, prove d 29 Ap r . foll., gives to s on W illiam ye house and home lo t t tha t he now lives in a n d ye penn plott before his gat e , an d ye lott I bought o f M atthew Chafey at ye Capts T ent, e tc.
