NOTES
1). Lambert arrived in North America in 1624, name of shi p i s u nknown. Lambert Jochemse van Valckenburch of New Amsterdam From The Washington Ancestry and Records of the McClain , J o hnson and Forty Other Colonial American Families Prepared for Edward Lee McClain by Charles Arthur Hoppi n . G reenfield, Ohio Privately Printed 1932 Contributed by Karl J. Van Valkenburgh LAMBERT JOCHEMSE VAN VALCKENBURCH Valckenburgh, Valkenbe r g , Valckenborch , born at Valkenburg in Dutch Limburg , o n th e Geule River, seven miles east of Maestrict, in H olla nd, a ppears first of record in America, July 29, 1644 , whe n he p urchased of Jan Jacobsen, a house and plantati on o n the isl and of Manhattan, with twenty five morgens o f lan d adjoinin g. Register of the Provincial Secretary o f Ne w Netherland , II, 121. Evjen s Scandinawan Immigran ts i n New York pa ge 406 erroneously places Lambert a s a Germ an from Falkenb urg in Germany, having been misle d by the s imilarity of pla ce names . The grantor was Ja n Jacobsen St ille van Vreeland t who died or left New Amst erdam soon aft er this sale. Many years later the land became a part of the farm of Co l o nel Nicholas Bayard who died in 1707 This land is o n t h e west side of the present Bowery from Canal Street t o Br oo me Street. There is no record of the disposal of th ese t wen ty five morgens fifty acres of land and the hou se o f Lamb ert van Valckenburch. It is stated in The Icono graph y of Ma nhattan Island VI,72 that he may have surr endere d this f arm to the West India Company when he acq uired t he trac t opposite to Kip s Bay plantation, late r known a s the Sam ler farm. This latter property was of twenty four morgens, grant e d b y Director General Peter Stuyvesant to Lambert van Va lc kenb urch, on May 15, 1649 It embraced what are now n in e cit y blocks on the west side of Lexington Avenue fro m Tw enty N inth to Thirty Fifth Streets, and extended, wes tward , acros s what are now Park and Madison Avenues beyon d Fift h Avenu e from Thirty First to Thirty Third Street , and inc luded th e corner of the present ThirtyThird Str eet and Fi fth Avenu e, on which stood, until 1929 the sout heastern pa rt of th e Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and wherein 1 931 was erec ted the E mpire State Building, then the highe st building i n the worl d. The confirmation of title to this property issued in 16 6 8 Libci Patents, III, 43, Albany by Richard Nicolls , Go vern or of the Province of New York, refers to the gro und b rie f from Stuyvesant to Lambert van Valckenburgh, da ted Ma y 15 , 1649, covering 48 acres 24 morgens , and rec ites th at th e land was conveyed to Claes Martensen. Thi s later ow ner i s identified in the Iconography of Manhatt an Island VI,138 , viz. Claes Martensen van Rosenvelt, the ancestor of the Roosev e l t family, occupied the farm originally granted to Lambe r t v an Valckenburgh, at least as early as 1635. Probabl y h e sol d his farm to Claes Martensen when he went nort h 165 2 . Di ngman Versteeg identified Martensen as Nicola s Marte ns, men tioned in a court record as early as Augus t 26 163 8. He i s said to have been the direct ancestor o f Theodor e Rooseve lt who was born less than a half mile d istant. The surname of Roosevelt was adopted by the children of N i c olas Martensen, in place of Nicolsen and Martensen, bec au s e Roosevelt was the name of the place in Holland fro m whi c h their father had come to America. On January 25, 164.4, a declaration of Olaf Stevensen v a n C ortland and Gysbert Opdyck refers to a statement of L am ber t van Valckenburch respecting property of Peter Live se n dec eased. Register of the Provincial Secretary of Ne w N etherl and, II, 95 Lambert Van Valckenburch seems t o hav e reside d upon the fifty acre farm he purchased of J an Jac obsen, a t least until March 16, 1647, when he was g ranted , by the D irector General of New Netherland, a pate nt fo r a lot on th e south side of Fort Amsterdam, Manhatt an Isl and. Land Pap ers of the Province of New Netherland , G.G. , p. 192. Here he may have lived until he removed to Fort Orange ab o u t 1652, as his second farm, acquired May 15, 1649, wa s ov e r two miles northward in a region sparsely settled , not w el l developed, and far beyond the defensive wall b uilt acr os s the island at Wall Street to protect the vill age aroun d F ort Amsterdam from Indians and others. The ho use and ga rde n location close under the southern wall o f Fort Amster da m was of such prominence and interest as t o merit furthe r n otice. The fort stood on the southwestern half of the site o f t h e present U.S. customhouse. The distance from the for t t o t he harbor was much less then than it is now. This l an d pate nted to Lambert van Valckenburch was nine rods an d o ne foo t long north and south by one rod and three fe et w ide. Th e northern end of this lot would be about fift y t o sixty fe et south of the southwestern corner of the U .S . Customhouse the southern end was directly upon the S tra nd, the narro w open space between the lot and the harb or . This positio n gave an unobstructed view, from the lot , o ver the entir e harbor. The grant of the lot was made f or t he creation th ereon of house and garden. It was a corner lot bounded by open public ways on thre e s i des. This land is outlined as lot No. 1, in Block H o f t h e key to the famous ancient Castello plan of New Amst erda m . This plan depicts a house upon the southern end o f th e la nd, exactly in the east and west center of the so uther n en d of Manhattan Island. As Lambert van Valckenbur ch wa s th e first grantee of this land, and, as when he so ld i t in 16 56 to Isaac Gravenraedt Greveract , his hous e ther eon wa s sold with the land, It is conceived that h e buil t the hou se. This lot was one of the only three al l grant ed in 1647 south of the fort. The lot next to the west was granted to, and patented b y , J an Evertsen Bout, the interpreter of the language o f th e In dians, and the other to Sergeant Huybertsenth e Engli shman , James Hubbard . Lambert van Valckenburch re moved t o For t Orange and Beverwyck Albany about four ye ars befo re h e sold this house and land to Gravenraedt i n 1656, and , als o, seemingly before his farm of forty eig ht acres wa s enter ed upon by Claes Martensen in 1655 G ravenraedt s old th e house and lot beside Fort Amsterdam t o Pieter Jans en Clot t of Mingaquy in New Yarsie March 23 , 1670, when th e hous e was described in the deed of sal e as an old Tenne ment. In 1673 the English commander o f New York New Amst erdam , Captain Colve, confiscated th is house and lot, wit h the t wo others aforesaid, for mili tary purposes. These h ouses ar e depicted in several of th e earliest pictures o f New Amste rdam. The site of the original lot would be now a strip 148 1 2 f eet long by 19 1 2 feet wide, beginning opposite th e so uthw estern corner of the U.S. Customhouse in State St reet , an d running southward to near the center of Batter y Park . A d rawing in The Iconography of Manhattan Islan d II, 27 3,274 , 388 outlines the bounds of this land, a s well as t he bou ndaries of the farm bought in 1644 of Ja n Jacobsen a nd of t he farm secured in 1649 of Director Ge neral Stuyves ant. Lambert Jochemse van Valckenburch of Fort Orange Present day Albany, New York From The Washington Ancestry and Records of the McClain , J o hnson and Forty Other Colonial American Families Prepared for Edward Lee McClain by Charles Arthur Hoppi n . G reenfield, Ohio Privately Printed 1932 Contributed by Karl J. Van Valkenburgh The earliest record of the presence at Fort Orange Alba n y of Lambert van Valckenburch is dated March 7, 1652 , i n th e proceeding of the court of Rensselaerswyck, whe n Cla es Ja nsz, from Bockhoven, also recorded as Claes d e Braeba nder , Holland, was summoned to court for having , out of sp ite a gainst Director Van Slichtenhorst, cause d his servan t to ha ul wood for Lambert van Valckenburch , contrary to t he ordin ances. The Honorable General seems to have been Slichtenhorst w h o , after contending against Peter Stuyvesant, was oblig e d t o return to Holland. What occasioned the controvers y do es n ot appear. If Lambert was defending Stuyvesant, w ho ha d gra nted to him the land beside Fort Amsterdam in 1 647 an d th e farm of forty eight acres in 1649 it would n ot be u nique , because Stu vesant s authority over Fort Or ange an d the c olony of Rensselaerswyck, while not to be c hallenge d succes sfully, were not always relished by som e of the in habitant s there.
