1). John D. Cottingham was born near Dover, Del., D e c . 3 1 , 1805, and he received a good education for hi s da y . H e b ecame a merchant, and decided to try his fo rtun e s in th e We st, then just beginning to be more gene rall y s ettled . H e located in Hamilton County, Ind., o ne o f th e pionee rs i n Noblesville, and engaged in merca ntil e purs uits ther e fo r a number of years. Much of th e pro fit o f his enterp ris e he put into land, became th e owne r of se veral large f arms , and laid out part of th e tow n of Cicer o on his land . Mov ing thither in 1849 o r 1850 , he was on e of the firs t reside nts of the new to wn, wa s its leadin g merchant an d continue d in busines s there t ill his death , Feb. 10, 187 5. In addi tion t o his own pr ivate busines s he was activ e in public af fa irs, was on e of the promine nt men of his l ocality and se r ved in 184 2 as a justice o f the peace. Hi s docket is s til l preserv ed. In politic s he was a Republi can, and w as prou d to h ave had the priv ilege of voting fo r Abraha m Lincoln . I n Noblesville, Joh n married Hannah Mul l, bo rn in New Je r sey June 4, 1815, d aughter of Samuel an d H annah Mull, p ione er settlers nea r Strawtown. A fami l y of seven child ren ble ssed the unio n of John and Hann ah , all born in Ha milton Cou nty, Ind. John W., Hannah , Emm a, Catherine , Calista, Oli n H., an d Ella. John re ared hi s family i n the Methodist fa ith, t o which churc h he belong ed. H e was always active i n it s work, wa s a class leade r an d helped found the first c hu rch of t hat denominatio n i n Cicero. Hannah died there s o me yea rs before her hu sband , Feb. 2, 1866, at the age o f 5 0 y ears and eight mo nths. Mr. C ottingh am wa s a pioneer settler in Hamilton C oun ty, havin g move d here i n the spring of 1824. Was ma rrie d in 183 5 or 183 6 to Hanna h Mull, who continued t o be hi s wife un til her d eath ten ye ars ago. Previou s to his m arriage h e had bee n an intempera te man. It wa s a stipula tion of hi s marriag e contract tha t he woul d cease the ha bit of dri nking, wh ich he did, joi ned t he M.E. Churc h and lived th e remainde r of his day s a s a temperate an d religious man . Was appoi nted at t he deat h of Dr. Palm er to serve ou t his term as A udito r of the cou nty was a fterward a Just ice of the Peac e f or this townshi p and al ways a prominen t and highly est e emed citizen. Abou t thr ee years ago h e married his th ir d wife, an excellent l ad y of Tipton Cou nty, when he m ove d to her home near Lanca s ter in that cou nty, where h e cont inued to live until ab ou t two weeks ag o when he m oved to K okomo and was take n sic k before he ha d arrange d his househ old goods, and d ied as a bove stated . his r emains were bro ught to Cicer o and burie d by the s ide o f the grave of hi s first wife . Moved to Kokomo three weeks before hi s dea th o n th e morn ing of February 11, 1875 in his 70t h year . H e wa s a membe r of the M.E. church for 43 year s. h e leave s a w idow, si x of his own children and seve ral st ep child ren . His bod y was taken to Cicero for bur ial .
