The Little Red Chair George Alexander and Calista Kibler Wilcox ha d b o r n e four girls Mary, Lucy, Grace, and Bertha. Betw ee n th e s e births, three baby boys were stillborn. Thre e de press io n s used to be visible in the front yard of t he ol d stag e c oa ch inn which had become the Wilcox hom e on St ate Rou te 1 4 n orthwest of Deerfield, where the l ittle bo dies wer e lai d t o rest. Finally George Clayto n arrived , to be fol lowe d by y et another girl, Bessie , who comple ted the fami ly. The arrival of Clayte, as he was known, was ca u s e f o r great joy. In those days, boys were money in t h e b ank f or the pioneer farmer, enabling him to acqui r e mor e lan d wh ich his sons could help him to work. Gir l s wer e an eco nomi c liability. While Clayte was very small, the little red ch a i r w a s purchased for him. It had a cane seat, was pain t e d brig h t red, and had little yellow rings at the turn in gs . Thre e g enerations of Wilcox children used it. Clayte was indulged by the four older sisters an d d o t i ng parents. He grew up to be undisciplined and co ul d n o t ma nage money, resulting in bankruptcy. He marri e d a ne ig hbo r girl, Caroline Logue, but they eventuall y d ivorced . Verna Welker confirmed that the chair had a can e s e a t , in a broad interwoven pattern. The chair has be en r ec an e d and repainted, but the little yellow rings r ecall e d b y Ve rna were not duplicated. Following is a transcription from a souvenir marria g e d o c ument for Clayte and Carrie This is to certify that Mr. Clayton Wilcox of Deerfie l d , P o rtage Co., State of Ohio, and Miss Carrie Logu e o f At wate r , Portage Co., State of Ohio, were by me un ite d in t he Ho l y Bonds of Matrimony According to the Or dina nce o f God a n d the laws of the State of Ohio at Edi nbur g on th e 26th d a y of September A.D. 1900.
