NOTES
1). bobspu.ged Taken from a newspaper obit. John Lewis Spurgeon John Lewis Spurgeon was born March 1, 1850, in Clinton County, Ohio, and died at his home in Lake City May 3, 1938, at the age of 88 years, 2mo and 3days. Although he had enjoyed good health throughout his lifetime, Mr. Spurgeon had been suffering from a heart ailment the past winter. His death was preceded by a paralytic stroke which occurred April 29. Mr. Spurgeon s early childhood was spent in Ohio. His parents were John & Ann Spurgeon, and he lived in a family with 11 brothers and sisters. When he was about eleven, the family moved to Linn County, Iowa. Then as a young man he went with them to Carroll County, where the Spurgeons settled on a farm near Glidden. Mr. Spurgeon was united in marriage Feb. 6, 1881 to Eliza Cox. After their marriage they, too, lived in the country near Glidden. It was not many years later, in 1890, that they took the family which was now theirs and began farming west of Lake City. On this place, which was known as the old Haynes farm, they made their home for some time. The middle period of their life was spent in the vicinity of Lake City. In March 1913, Mr. & Mrs. Spurgeon moved to the town of Lake City. Here they have lived ever since. February 6 of this year this couple passed their 57th year of married life together. For 49 years they have lived in and around Lake City. Mr. Spurgeon, as his age indicates, was a pioneer. He was of the old stock, a settler in this country when it was quite new. One of his unique and fond memories was that of using oxen to help break and farm the land. Mr. Spurgeon had one daughter who recently preceded him in death. There are left to mourn his wife 4 sons Arthur of Austin, Minn., Willard, Walter and Floyd, all of Lake City 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A multitude of friends and old neighbors also pause to pay respect to a fine father, a good neighbor, and an honest man. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with the Rev. Gaylord M. Couchman officiating. Burial was at Cottonwood cemetery. Source Dorothy Dotty Cox June 2000
