NOTES
1). George Wade was one of the earliest citizens of Columbia . He had been born in North Carolina and had moved to Lanca ster County, from which section he had entered the Revoluti on as captain of a company. In Columbia he became owner o f many squares of land, especially in the southwestern sect ion his home is said to have been near the northwest corne r of Main and Green Streets. He was one of the incorporator s of the Columbia Male academy and of the Presbyterian chur ch and in 1797 one of the town commissioners. His wife, Mar y McDonald, died August 22, 1779. He married again Mrs. Mar tha Center, widow of Nathan Center died in 1783 , a siste r of Col. Thomas Taylor. When he died in 1824 he was buried , it is said, in the Taylor graveyard his grave is unmarke d. History of Richland County by Edwin L. 2). MARY McDONALD was the daughter of Donald McDonald and th e wife of George Wade. Her home was burned and she, with he r baby, was taken prisoner to Charleston by Tarleton in re taliation for aid given by her to Sumter, after he was woun ded at King s Mountain. Both she and the child died of smal l pox while in prison, contracted while nursing fellow pris oners. Her body was afterward interred on the site of her o ld home, and a monument erected in loving memory by the ci tizens of Lancaster County. The child had been buried, wit h ten others, in a common grave, so it could not be recogni zed. Mary McDonald, having General Sumpter ill at her hom e at McDonald s Ford, and being warned of the approach of t he butcher, Tarlton, drove by night, with the General and h er little daughter, to a place of safety in the swamps. Ret urning, she met Tarlton at the ferry landing on her own pla ce. In an effort at delaying him, she possessed herself o f his pistol and discharged it in the face of the irate re d coat. In the meantime, her little girl had cut the rop e holding the ferry. This going adrift, the British were f orced to make a detour of several miles to cross the river , swollen by recent Rains. Thus ample opportunity was affor ded Gen. Sumpter to make good his escape. As has been bef ore stated, she was taken to Charleston where she died in p rison. Undoubtedly she was hated by Tarlton for some goo d cause, and beloved for like reason by her compatriots. Th e spot where she died is marked now only by a stone, as th e monument erected by public subscription was destroyed b y the Federal troops in 1864. !BIRTH McDonald.
