NOTES
1). History of the Adams Family by James Hopkins Adams According to tradition, Joel Adams ran away from home whe n he was very young because of an intense dislike for his s tepfather. Apparently he was about eighteen years of age wh en he came to lower Richland County in 1768 and obtaine d a grant of land adjoining the property of William Weston . Although lacking a formal education, Joel Adams was a ver y intelligent, hardworking, courageous and ambitious man o f the highest character. By his own merits heamassed a for tune. It is told that his courtship of Grace Weston was long a nd persistent. So many times did she refuse him that he res olved never again to ask her to marry. Nevertheless, one da y while riding, his horse by habit turned in to the Westo n home, and Joel decided to try once more. They were marrie d, and lived a long and happy life together. !DEATH Headstone, St John s Episcopal, Congaree, SC, Headst one, St John s Episcopal, Congaree, SC
2). St John s Churchyard..... . . . within this same enclosur e are two headstones, simple and unattractive, standing sid e by side, as the old couple had stood in life toward eac h other in all things these two headstones mark the resti ng places of Joel and Grace Adams, the former born in 1750 , the latter in 1752, and both lived to reach the age of ei ghty.
