NOTES
1). Our Sparrow line descends from HIRAM WILLIAM SPARROW, who, according to information handed down in that family through the years, came to America in the early 1800 s in a sailboat . this quotation is from a great grandson, George Sparrow, who had accumulated some information on early generations of the family. We do not know where he entered this country, but there is indication that it was either Virginia or Charleston, SC. There are a number of descendants of HIRAM WILLIAM SPARROW now living in the Sparrow Springs area in North Carolina, just across the State line above Clover, South Carolina, at the foot of Kings Mountain. A Sparrow family reunion has been held at the site of the Springs the first Sunday in August for a number of years. Most of my notes on the Sparrow line were obtained by attending some of these reunions. The water of Sparrow Springs has apparently had some reputation for its medicinal qualities from the earliest days of the settlement of that area. The property was acquired by Hiram William Sparrow at some point in his early life, and became known by his name. In his will 1887 he goes at length into suggested use to be made of the property, envisioning a hotel and other facilities to fully develop what he considered the economic possibilities of the Springs. He was possibly influenced by the successful operation of the Glenn Springs resort in Spartanburg County, SC, at that time. None of his plans materialized, however, and the site of the Springs, about thirty acres, is now maintained by family descendants in the area. The parents of Hiram William sparrow are not known. According to descendants now living in the sparrow Spring community, he came to America from Ireland as a young man, sometime in the early 1800 s. He was born presumably in Ireland. In the early 1830 s he had evidently migrated to the area around Lincolnton, NC. On January 19, 1834, he married Julia Ann Dews, of Lincolnton. George Sparrow, a descendant, of Clover, SC, has given me a small package of account records, tax receipts and other such papers handed down from Hiram William Sparrow. These records indicate that he was a cabinet maker or carriage maker by trade, and evidently very thrifty and particular about business matters. Hiram William Sparrow and Julia Ann Dews Sparrow began their married life in 1834 in Lincolnton, and moved to Davidson College about 1837, where they were living until about 1845. From there they moved to some point in Cleveland County, NC, possibly the Springs location. At the time of his death, he was living on the Sparrow Springs tract. The following notes are taken from entries in the family Bible of Hiram William Sparrow, now in the possession of descendant, Miss Nellie Elizabeth Sparrow, who lives in the Springs community Hiram William Sparrow and Julia A. Dews was married the 19 of January 1834. Thomas Alexander Sparrow was born at Lincolnton December 18, 1835. George Washington Sparrow was born at Davidson College, Mecklenburg, March 8, 1838. Nancy Elizabeth Sparrow was born at Davidson College, Mecklenburg County, March 4, 1840. Martha Melinda Sparrow was born at Davidson College February 13, 1842. Cyrus Pinckney Sparrow was born at Davidson College March 23, 1844. William Henry Sparrow was born in Cleveland County, NC, August 16, 1846. Sarah Louisa Sparrow was born in Cleveland County, NC, February 23, 1849.
