1). CAPTAIN WILLIAM A. CUMMING 1 Demitted from St. John s Lodge No. 1 to unite in forming Wilmington Lodge. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, April 12th, 1834, and removed to Wilmington when about twenty years of age. Here at the breaking out of our Civil War he joined the Confederat4e Army, and served through the war as an officer of the famous Third North Carolina Infantry and after the surrender returned to Wilmington where he entered in to business with his two brothers in law, Mssrs. Samuel and W.H. Northrop, forming the well known firm of Northrop and Cumming, for many years past engaged in the lumber trade. Mr. Cumming was a large handsome man, affable and cheerful in his manners, a fine horseman, fond of all outdoor sports and loved to follow the chase in pursuit of the fox and deer. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He joined the Masonic Order while in the army, Mary 25th, 1864 made an Entered Apprentice in St. Johns Lodge No. 1 November 3rd, 1864, a Fellow Craft January 4th, 1865, and a Master Mason February 9th, 1865. He was ill for many months and died at his residence in the City of Wilmington, October 26th, 1886, at 2 o clock A.M., aged fifty two years. Was buried from the First Presbyterian Church and interred in Oakdale Cemetery. Source History of Wilmington Lodge, No. 319 by D.W. Bain, Grand Secretary, not dated.
