NOTES
1). Thomas Dews, County. 060 Date 1851 Recorded Copy Will WB 2 356, Original at NC Archives Source Genealogical Records, 1665 1900, NC Wills The Dews line is French, immigrants by that name having come to America from the Isle of Guernsey, off the coast of France. Thomas Dews, Sr., and his wife Martha are the earliest of the line now known, although there is a possibility that it can be carried further back, as stated below. The parents of Thomas Dews, Sr. are not known. He came to America from the Isle of Guernsey, off the coast of France, sometime in the early 1800 s. His wife, Martha, was also born in the Island of Guernsey , as her tombstone reads. Descendants in the Sparrow family say Thomas and Martha Dews landed here in Charleston, SC, but there is no proof of this. Others by the name of Dews, also from Guernsey, came through ports in Virginia and eastern North Carolina. Thomas and Martha were married before leaving Guernsey. They settled in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he was evidently a carpenter or followed a similar trade successfully. At one of the Sparrow reunions I attended, those present had been asked to bring any old family records that might be of interest to the group. Among these papers was the remains, partially torn away, of a letter of introduction brought by Thomas Dews when he left Guernsey for America. It is an attestation to his good character by the Rector of the Church at St. Peter Port, Isle of Guernsey. In addition to the character reference, the paper appears to have included a certificate of the marriage of Thomas and Martha, and the names of the parents of each. Unfortunately, that part of the paper with these items, and the date it was written, is largely torn away and missing. It is possible that this same information could be obtained today form the same church records. Thomas Dews, Sr. died in Lincolnton, NC, August 20, 1851, and is buried in the old Lutheran cemetery there. In his will he mentions his two sons, leaving his tools, lumber, etc. to George, but says I will no part of my estate to Thomas, Jr. The sparrow descendants say that Thomas, Jr., was a well educated, scholarly young man, and was making a name for himself in the practice of law in Lincolnton, but died before reaching thirty years of age. I don t know how to account for the treatment given him in his father s will. See notes on Thomas Dews, Jr. Source Sellers McLaughen papers by Patrick C. Smith, 1971, rev. 1984
