NOTES
1). located on the 1860 census, East Division of Owen county, Indiana, P.O. Spencer, Indiana four children, James A, Amma spelled Anna on this census , John and Mary. Thomas was a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000. and personal property valued at $200.00 located on the 1870 census, Washington TWP area of Greene County, Indiana, P.O. Marco, Indiana. Their son John is not listed & presumably has died before the census. Their son William O. Dowden has been born and James A, Amma spelled Anna, middle initial P amd Maria A shown as Mary in 1860 . Thomas is listed as a laborer with no real estate and personal property of $100.00 located on the 1880 census still in Washington TWP, Greene County, Indiana. Children are James A, Eva M Mary on 1860 & Maria A on 1870 census and their youngest son, King Sol. Thomas is listed as a farmer on this census. Amma is now married to Joseph Daugherty and they, along with their unnamed son to be named Claud are living in the Stockton TWP area of Greene County, Indiana.Thomas Jefferson Dowden, son of William Harrod and Nancy Chambers Dowden, was born 17 Sept 1831 in Indiana. He married Mary J. Birley about 1853 date calculated from age of oldest child 1860 census , possibly in Owen Co., IN. He has not been located on a census for 1850. By 1860, he and his wife Mary were living in the East Division of Owen Co., IN, P.O. Spencer. By this time they had four children James A. Amma her name spelled Anna on this census John and Mary. Thomas was a farmer, owned real estate valued at $1000.00 and personal property value $200.00 By 1870 Thomas and Mary were living in the Washington TWP area of Greene Co., IN, P.O. Marco. Their son John is not listed on this census so it is assumed he has died. Their son, William O. has been born and James A., Amma name spelled Anna on this census and looks like middle initial is P.and Maria A., who is listed as Mary on the 1860 census. Thomas is listed as a laborer, owns no real estate and personal property value of $100.00 By 1880 Thomas and Mary, along with their children James A., Eva M. Mary on 1860 and Maria A. on the 1870 census and their youngest son, King Sol, are still living in the Washington TWP of Greene Co., IN. Thomas is listed a farmer on this census. By this time Amma has married Joseph Dougherty Daugherty and they are living in Stockton TWP of Greene Co., IN with their newly born son, as yet unnamed, who would be Claud. Her name is spelled Amma on this census. According to their granddaughter, Louella Ella Daugherty Posey, her grand parents moved to Missouri same time as her parents, Joseph and Amma Daugherty between the latter half of 1881 and before 23 Oct 1883 . She also said the names of her mother s siblings were Albert, Ollie, King and Ellie, who married a Mr. Miller. For whatever reason for all the different names, Mary Maria A. Eva M. and Ella or Ellie, all appear to be one and the same person, judging from the fact, on all the census, the age agrees with this person of several names. Ella said she was named after her aunt. Three indentures were made 18 Sept 1895, Book X page 516, 517 and 518. Paul and Mollie Ellis, husband and wife, of Wright Co., MO, sold for the sum of $26.66 paid by each, Albert Dowden for the SE 1 4 of the SE 1 4 of Section 35, TWP 28, Range 16 of Wright Co., MO Ella Dowden for the SW 1 4 of the SE 1 4 of Section 35, TWP 28, Range 16 of Wright Co., MO and King Dowden the NW 1 4 of the SE 1 4 of Section 35, TWP 28, Range 16 of Wright Co., MO. Thomas J. Dowden had died by 8 Oct 1895 when his widow, Mary J. Dowden, applied at the General Land Office in Springfield, MO, Vol 22 1893 1903 page 418 for Homestead of the NE 1 4 of the SE 1 4, Section 35, TWP 28, Range 16 of Wright Co., MO containing 40 acres and a document from the United States of America, dated 9 Feb 1898 making it official when her Homestead was granted. By 1900 Joseph and Amma Falina Dowden Daugherty have moved to Indian Territory, OK. King Dowden on this census his name is spelled Cain , born Jan 1874 IN, owns his own farm free of mortgage, his wife, Elizabeth Anna, born Dec 1874 in KY are listed on the 1900 census for Pleasant Valley TWP, Wright Co., MO. They have been married 2 years, no children. They are living in the same area in 1910, no children and his name is King Solomon Dowden on this census. The 1900 census for Pleasant Valley TWP, Wright Co., MO list Mary J. Dowden, age 68 born Dec 1831 in Indiana, her father born NC, her mother born KY. She is a farmer of a farm she owns free of mortgage. She is a widow of six children, 5 living which would agree with the 1870 c. of Greene Co., IN, where son John is not listed so he is the one who died. Also living in this household is Albert J., born Nov 1856 in IN. He is single and a farmer. Mary and her son, name listed James A. on this census, are still living in the same area in 1910. Apparently James Albert never married. William Ollie Dowden remained in Indiana living in Monroe County with his wife Katherine and their three known children. Mary, Marie A., Eva M. Ella or Ellie Dowden all believed to be one and the same person, married a Mr. Miller according to Ella Daugherty Posie. Ella Dowden, as before mentioned, bought land adjoining her mother s homestead. No other mention of her has been found. The fact that Mary filed for homestead after Thomas had died indicated that he probably died in Cedar Gap, Wright Co., MO as related by his grandaughter, Ella Daugherty Posey. And since Mary was in Wright Co., as late as 1910, the year of her 79th birthday, it is safe to assume she too died in Cedar Gap and she and Thomas are buried there. According to Ella Posey, Thomas and Mary were members of the church of Christ.
