NOTES
1). Lancaster 1, Sept 1919 Grant County, Wisconsin Newspaper For 57 years a Potosi resident when Fritz Koeller answered the last call, leaves large family. Another well known and highly respected old pioneer resident of Potosi has gone to his reward. Fritz Koeller after an illness of several months duration died at his home in the village of Potosi Thursday forenoon, Sept. 4th. The cause of his death was from ailments incident to old age. In the passing of Fritz Koeller this community loses an honest and upright citizen, one who was liked by everyone who knew him. He was a hard working man and his every care was for the welfare of his family. It can be truthfully said that if hard work and kind deeds and loving devotion to his family will pave the way to the kingdom of heaven the soul of this good man rests there. Frederick Koeller was born at Swacnal, Germany, Sept. 21st, 1836, and died at Potosi Sept. 4th 1919, aged 82 years 11 months and 17 days. He came to this country in 1854 and for a period of six or seven years worked for the Illinois Central railroad transfer at Dunlieth, now E. Dubuque. He came to Potosi, in 1862 and for 57 years had continuously lived here. He was married to Miss Gertrude Smythe of Potosi, in February, 1870 and for more than 40 years lived a peaceful life. To this union were born twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. One son died in infancy and another son, Adolph, died Nov. 12, 1918. Besides his aged, loving and devoted wife he leaves to mourn his departure from earth, six sons and four daughters. They are John of Minneapolis, Minn., Herman and Chas. residing in Canada, August, Chris and Joseph of Potosi, Mrs. Jos. Leuer and Mrs. L. A. Kunz of Mallard, IA., Mrs. F. J. Sauer of Aberdeen, S.D., and Mrs. Leo Wiedman of Potosi. The funeral was held on Monday morning from the home to St. Thomas Catholic Church and was largely attended. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. J. E. Prucha and at the conclusion thereof the funeral cortege wended its way to the Catholic cemetery on the hill and the last that was mortal of the loving and devoted husband and father was consigned to the grave. All of the surviving children from far and near attended the funeral to pay their last loving tribute to the fond old father. The family desires to express their sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors for the kindness shown them during the sickness and death of the husband and father. Michael Frerich Koeller is supposed to have stowed away on a boat from Germany to USA, at the age of 14. He had a sister in the USA whose married name was Kaeding. Also had a brother named Will. He may have been traveling in a wagon train to go west but stopped around Potosi to see his sister and never got any further. He worked in the brewery at Potosi. From information of Leonard Koeller, Fort Wayne, IN From Leonard Koeller s Book. Frederick Fritz Koeller was a Lutheran and didn t join the Catholic Church until maybe 12 or 13 years before he died. But all their children were baptized in the Catholic church and he made them attend mass with their mother. Wife Gertrude after each baby came she would walk and carry the baby to the Tennyson Catholic Church to be baptized. Christoff and Sophia Farch Koeller were the parents of Frederick Fritz Koeller. He was born in Schwachenwalde or Swacnal, Prussia September 21, 1836. Christoff ran a bakery in the capital city when Fritz was a child. His mother died and his father remarried a younger woman, starting a new family. Fritz was unhappy, so when he neared fourteen an age that made him subject to the military drafthe left Germany with his older married sister Wilemina Koeller Kading. The young Kading couple was able to take Fritz to America by claiming his as their son. They, and another brother Will Koeller, settled in Grant County, Wisconsin. As a youngster, Fritz worked as a farm hand, worked on barges on the Mississippi, and the railroad at DunliethEast Dubuque . Later he worked at the old Potosi brewery ending his career as a brewmeister. Fritz and Trudy Smythe Koeller were married in Glen Haven, Wisconsin February 26, 1870. Fritz was raised in the Lutheran Church, but respected Trudy s strong Catholic faith. He sent his children to mass with her and finally joined her church a few years before his death. The Koellers had twelve children within twenty four years. As soon as possible after each birth, Trudy carried the baby to the Catholic Church in Tennyson, Wisconsin for baptism. She sent Minnie to the church with the eighth baby with instructions to name her Mary Anne. By the time she got to the church, Minnie told the priest that the baby s name was Mae. The Koellers were a large, happy, outgoing family that enjoyed each other s company. Trudy had a spinning wheel, carding and spinning her wool. As she spun wool, Fritz knitted the socks, mittens, and sweaters for his family. They raised a large garden, as well as pigs and chickens for their meat and eggs. Fritz was fond of good old Potosi beer, but suffered Trudy s wrath and broom if he over imbibed. His children fondly remembered his gift of large peppermint candy canes at Christmas. Three Koeller children married Weidmans in the Potosi area. Mae Koeller married Leonary Kunz and her older brother Herman married Leonard s sister Etta. Another family connection was with the Leuers. Minnie Koeller went to Mallard to teach in Ellington township because her Aunt Mary Smythe Leurer lived there. Minnie married her first cousin Joe Leuer and stayed in the Mallard area the rest of her life. The three Koeller brothers Herman, Charles, Adolf moved to Canada in 1918. Adolph fell ill and died on the way. The others settled in Saskatchewan.
