Having commanded under his half brother Athelstan at Brunanburgh, Edmund recaptured parts of the Midlands 942 and Northumbria 944 seized by Norse King Olaf Guthfrithson of Dublin died 942 after Athelstan s death. He secured the Anglo Scottish borderby subduing Strathclyde 945 , handing this to Malcolm 1 of Scotland for promised military aid. Powerful Wessex born ealdormen brothers ruled East Anglia and Kent for the King. An Edmund charter first records Derbyshire. Edmund was stabbed to death by Leofa, an exiled thief an ironic fate when the first Hundred district court originated in his reign.
