NOTES
1). 1 UPDA 2 DATE 1040 2 PLAC Acceded MACBETH, pronounced muhk BEHTH ? 1057 , seized the throne of Scotland in 1040 after defeating and killing King Duncan I. He based his claim to the crown on his victory and his wife s royal ancestry. Malcolm III, son of Duncan I, and Earl Siward of Northumberland defeated Macbeth at Dunsinane in 1054, but they did not dethrone him. Three years later, Malcolm III killed Macbeth at Lumphanan. Macbeth s stepson Lulach reigned for a few months, and then Malcolm III succeeded Lulach as king. William Shakespeare based his play Macbeth upon a distorted version of these events which he found in Raphael Holinshed s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland 1578 . The only historical truth in the play is Duncan s death at the hand of Macbeth. From this fact, Shakespeare drew his portrait of ambition leading to a violent and tragic end.
2). 1 NAME Cruouch 1 UPDA 2 PLAC Gruoch There is a belief that Gruoch married Malcolm III, and perhaps it was not the same Grouch that married Macbeth. I have stuck to the traditional versions
