NOTES
1). bobspu.ged BIO John SPEER was reported to have stayed in contact with Byron and Emma GILCHRIST for some time after the death of his wife, Louise PAINTER, about 1960. He eventually remarried, and the contact ceased. Compiler s brother, Jim GILCHRIST, made telephone contact via listings on the internet, with Howard PAINTER, son of Luther PAINTER and nephew of Ernest PAINTER, John s father in law in early 1997. Per Mr.PAINTER, John or R.J. as he referred to him, remarried after Louise s death, and as of Feb. 1997, John s second wife was a patient in a nursing home in Zanesville, OH. From the comments made by Howard PAINTER, Jim Gilchrist made the assumption that John SPEER had previously passed away. REF 1. Byron B. GILCHRIST, nephew of James K. 2). bobspu.ged BIO Per the reports of Byron GILCHRIST and his wife, Emma, Louise PAINTER SPEER died sometime after 1960 in the Zanesville area. She was still living in March of 1959, and served as the informant for her mother s death certificate. At that time Mrs. John SPEER gave her residence as Zanesville, OHIO. Information provided by Cindy BUCK, Secretary of the church where Louise and her family were members, included the following their daughter, Louise Painter married R.J. SPEER very active in the church played the piano for the Sunday School and maybe for church before she was married... Byron and Emma GILCHRIST had told compiler in more than one interview, that John SPEER had stayed in touch with them for a short time after his wife s death. He later remarried, and the contact ceased. In Dec. 1997, Mary Alice GILCHRIST, the daughter of Byron and Emma, included in a letter to compiler, some of her memories of visits with the PAINTER and GILCHRIST families. About Louise, Mary wrote Louise Painter Speer was a school teacher. I believe she graduated from Whittenburg sp? College, but it may have been some other nearby school like that. Ohio has many of them. I remember that she married John secretly. He was being drafted into the Army for WWII and she would lose her teaching job if the school system found out that she was married. That was a common policy among many systems at that time. Just coming out of the Depression people were probably lucky to have one job in a family. Anyway, I remember her as being rather tall and slender like her mother, but not as distinctive in coloring. She may have been a Kindergarten teacher, at least it was elementary school. After the war, John went to work for the post office as a mail carrier. They never had any children. I believe she died of cancer. REF 1. Byron B.
