AULT, taken from page 54 of a compilation of obituaries 1928 1931, Fulton County Pub. Lib., Rochester, IN. Photocopy of page provided to compiler by Wilma MOW FOLTZ, 1029 E 450 N, Rochester, IN 46975. 1996 BIO Excerpts from a two page article in the Fulton Co. History JOSEPH AULT The industrial interests of Rochester are well represented by this gentleman, a well known architect and mechanic, who has been prominently connected with building in this city, evidences of his work being seen in many of the structures of this city. Mr. Ault is of Hoosier nativity, his birth havibg occurred in Huntington county, March 31, 1858. The Ault family had its origin in Saxony and the original ancestor probably landed at New York and settled near that city, for Philip Ault, the great grandfather of our subject, was born in Manhattan. Removing to Pennsylvania, he located at Valley Forge, where he was living during the memorable winter that the American army under George Washington suffered untold hardships there... ...After leavingthe public schools of Rochester, Joseph attended the State Normal school at Terre Haute, after which he taught for a few years. He learned the business of woodworking with his father. For six months he was an employee in the shops of the Wabash RailroadCo. at Peru, Indiana. He has also erectedsome stations for the Standard Oil Co. and for years has been one of the leading contractors of Rochester, erecting buildings for, J.B. Fieser, O.P. Dillon, Cary Rapp, J.M. Kern and others. He is now doing shop work and architecture in his own planing mill. He is a broad gauged, practical business man who has gained the confidence of all the public patronage. For two years, he served as town clerk and is now serving on the Rochester school board. During his incumbency, the board has erected a $20,000 school building, largely through his efforts. He is deeply interested in public education and all interests to advance the schools receive his support. Mr. Ault s interests center on his family. He was married March25, 1884...Joanna M. Flora, and they now have four interesting children Fred H, a lad of ten years Edith M. seven years Joseph O., aged four and an infant, Willie. The 1880 census for Rochester shows Joseph as the 22 year old son of Henry and his occupation is given as Teacher . Joseph and family may have moved from Rochester before his children were grown. The marriage index gives no listing for any of his children. Early in 1997, Wilma Foltz found and made a photocopy of the following obituary for Joseph F. AULT. She explained that a retired judge and his wife were compiling all of the old obituaries into book for, and that this was among the ones she copied from 1928 1931. The page had no date or year one it, and compiler did not have the pagebefore and after this one to use as a guide. Other obituaries in close proximity were from 1930. Joseph F. AULT, aged 72, former resident of Rochester, died at 5 00 o clock Saturday evening at his home in Warroad, Minn., death being due to heart trouble. Early Saturday morning he suffered a heart attack and his condition gradually grew worse until the end. He had been in ill health for some time but his condition was not regarded as serious. Mr. AULT came to Rochester with his parents when only five years of age and continued to live here for many years. He was educated in the Rochester schools andbecame deeply interested in the educational work of the county. For three years he served on the school board. He followed the occupation of an architect and contractor and built a number of school houses in the county. Mr. AULT was a former member of the Rochester band and was the director of this organization for several years. Surviving are his wife and four children, Fred H. AULT and Edith Gerrie, of Warroad William F. AULT, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Joseph AULT, of Rochester 11 grandchildren, twosisters, Mrs. W.J. BAILEY and Mrs. G.F. BARCUS of Rochester. Burial will be made in Warroad. Joseph AULT of this city, has gone to Warroad to attend the services.
