LAY Vivian LAY, Birmingham, AL Ed HUDSON, Knoxville, TN Bible Records 6. WILLIAM QUILLIN LAY, by Mary Alice LAY EARNHART photocopy provided to compiler by Eva McCARTY. Mrs. EARNHART is a direct desc. of Wm. Q. LAY, via his son, George Calvin. BIO Eva McCARTY included the following in a letter to compiler in 1996 William Q., Uncle Billy ...and Louisa are both buried in Sardis Methodist Cemetery where they have a huge monument... In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY sent a photocopy of an article re William Quillin and his family, written by a descendent of William s son, George Calvin LAY. In this article, Mrs. EARNHART writes William Quillin Lay was born near Tazewell, Claiborne County, TN. on May 7, 1847. The son of John Lay and Mary Pauline O Dell Lay, was one of a family of ten children. On the 14th day of December 1873 he was united in marriage to Louisa Jane Brown in Marion County, Tennessee. Louisa Jane Brown was the daughter of George Washington Brown and America Alder Brown... In 1867 William Quillin Lay went to Indiana near Lebanon and later to Stanton. During this time he devoted his energy to farming, and the timber business, later he occupied the position of weigher in a mine. In 1870 he took up his residence in Campbell County, Tn. and a year later, 1871, came to Marion County. For eleven years he engaged in farming near Victoria and then he purchased very desirable property at Rankin s Cove, about five miles east of Jasper. William Quillin Lay was educated in the common schools, was always a busy and a useful man. William Quillin Lay and wife Louisa Jane Brown Lay were the parents of ten children... ..., William Quillin Lay, built a log school house on the hill a mile from their home, where three roads joined... William Quillin and Louisa Jane Brown Lay also had thirty four grandchildren. COMPILER s NOTE Compiler found a list of the men who served with the 2nd TN Vol. Inf. Reg. on a computer internet genealogy site, Sep. 1997. On that list appeared a William P. LAY . Information given was as follows LAY, William P Private H Unk 00 1 Aug 1863 2 Mar 1864. Unk. Discharge certificate furnished by War Department 28 Apr 1891. Details of separation not clear. Unfortunately, the 00is in the position of Age of the soldier . There is no way to confirm whether or not this might be William Q.s record. Compiler has no information from descendants of William Q. that he was a veteran of the Civil War. Louisa Jane BROWN was the daughter of George Washington BROWN and America ALDER... Louisa Jane BROWN LAY was born in Campbell County, Tennessee, 17, 1850, and died in the home of her son, John david LAY, in Marion County, Tennessee, near Jasper on January 8, 1923, buried in the Sardis Methodist Cemetery, near Victoria, Tennessee . ...William Quillin Lay and wife Louisa Jane Brown Lay were the parents of ten children,... ...
