1). bobspu.ged m1. Rhoda C. Lay m2. Lizzie White BIO Charles WELLS appears on the 1880 census for Campbell County, TN, on the the page preceding the household of Elisha LAY, his brother in law. Charles was enumerated as 24 years of age his occupation at that time was Laborer.He and Roda C. have two children, James, 2 and William 8 months of age. Also enumerated in the household, is Charles s sister in law, Mary LAY, 25 years of age. Per biographical notes provided to compiler by Eva McCARTY, Charles and Mary, who had a severe spinal deformity the result of a childhood injury produced a child. Mary and the child both died, but because of the ensuing scandal, Rhoda and Charles moved away from Campbell County, where Rhoda and Mary were born and raised. REF 1. Wm. J. HEINLE, 219 E. 2). bobspu.ged BIO Although neither Mr. HEINLE nor Mrs. McCARTY gives a middle name for Rhoda, one of them recorded her name as Rhoda C. On the 1870 census, Rhoda appears as Kate in her mother s household. She was enumerated as Roda C. in her husband s household in 1880. It seems likely that her middle name may have been Catherine. Mrs. McCarty writes, Rhoda is the tenth child of John Jack and Mary Pauline...She married Charles Henderson WELLS ...After the scandle about her sister, Mary, Rhoda and Charles left Campbell Co., and apparently no one knew where they went...Through a desc. of Charles WELLS, ...that Rhoda and Charles moved to Fountain City, Knox County TN . They are both buried in the Salem Church Cemetery...After Rhoda s death Charles married Lizzie WHITE.
