VA Note THE NAME Marjoribanks is associated with Lady Marjorie Bruce, the daughter of King Robert the Bruce and is derived from lands near the village of Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire which were called terre de Marjoriebankis in Lady Marjorie s honour. The story has been told for many years that these lands were granted to her by her father on the occasion of her marriage in 1315 to Walter Stewart but this explanation has not been confirmed historically. It was the custom of the day for occupants of lands to take their name from their property and those who occupied the Dumfriesshire lands called themselves with some slight changes in spelling Marjoribanks. Most people who bear the name now pronounce it MARCHBANKS and it has been spelled that way by some branches of the family since the 17th century. Some people spell it Marchbank or Marshbanks. Some have abbreviated it to Banks. There are many hundreds of Marjoribanks kin in the United States the exact number is impossible to determine and many of them are descendants of George Marjoribanks who was captured by the English at Preston during the rebellion of 1715 and was transported to Virginia. As soon as he arrived in the New World, he changed the spelling of his name to Marchbanks. He and his wife Ann had four sons and three daughters and many Americans trace their ancestry to this branch of the family. Others are descended from Marchbankses who arrived later from Scotland. Web Site of The Majoribanks Family George Majoribanks was born in Scotland and he is speculated to be the son of George, grandson of George, great grandson of Thomas,great great grandson of John, great great great grandson of Thomas Majoribanks of Ratho. After serving in the Jacobite uprising, he was captured and imprisoned, then deported from England. He arrived in Virginia on the Elizabeth & Ann on January 14, 1716. There he met and married Ann Eckols. The name was shortened to Marchbanks after his arrival in the new world. Amelia County, Va.
