NOTES
1). mytree.FTW The following is a portion of the memorial to Eli Cornish by his son in law, Samuel Gill Lee, husband of Clara Birta Cornish. He composed this upon Eli s death and printed several copies on yellow silk. One is in the possesion of Dennis Lee, granson of Samuel and Clara Lee. Sleep on beloved, sleep and take thy rest, Lay down thine head on the Savior s breast We loved thee well, but Jesus loved thee best. Good night! Good night! Good night! Mr. Eli Cornish was the fourth son of Calvin and Elizabeth Cornish. He was born in Drew County, Arkansas, December 26th, 1847, and died at his home in Hampton of Tuesday night, August 31st, at 10 35 o clock. His body was laid to rest in the family lot at the Camp Ground Cemetery Thursday afternoon, Rev. E. J. Slaughter officiating. Eli Cornish was married in 1870 to Miss Sarah J. Benton, in Drew County, and to this union was born eleven children, five of whom preceded the devoted father to the Glory Land. Thus ends a life on usefulness he has gone from labor unto refreshment. His early days were spent in the mill and gin business. After giving up this life in his later years, he spent most of the time in Oklahoma City with his son, Calvin. He was a member of the Methodist Church here. He had been sick for several months before coming back home from Oklahoma, and had been here only about three weeks before he was called to his reward. Death was caused from stomach and kidney trouble.
