NOTES
1). Henry Balcombe, blacksmith, married, Sarah Smith and later in 1666 married Elizabeth Haynes. He was admitted an inhabitant of Charlestown on Sept 1 1665 at which time he was a Constable at Charlestown. His signature may be found on a return of jurors dated August 17, 1665 in the files of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts File 1396 . He bought land of Walter Allen ,June 20, 1669, at Charlestown, bounded , NE Street to ferry SE W. Allen SW Thomas Lynde s Great Field NW James Casey. This tract of land was approximately one half acre in area. The intersection of the streets at the north eastern boundary form what is known as City Square. One part of this tract was sold by his heirs in 1709, and another part in 1723. The inventory of his estate which is on file at Middlesex Registry of Probate at Cambridge records an estate valued at �354 19 0. The Haynes family settled on a grant of land called Quinisigmonnd after arrival on the Confidence April 9, 1638. Deacon John Haynes granted one hundred of land included in the tract to Henry Balcombe, September 5, 1672. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth returned to Sudbury with her children. In 1694 and at other times she purchased more land which when added to the original 100 acre tract totaled narly one square mile. DEATH Charlestown Vital Records. MARRIAGE Charlestown Vital Records.
