NOTES
1). 1 UPDA 2 DATE 28 OCT 1216 2 PLAC Acceded Gloucester Cathedral King 1216 1272 House of Angevins. He was nine when his father John died. Henry was interested in castles, houses, art and religion. He rebuilt Westminster Abbey. He wasted a lot of money trying to get back lands in France. His barons did not like the way he ruled and took control of the country led by Simon de Monfort who won the Battle of Lewes in 1264. Henry and his son got back control of the country after Simon was killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. Ratified the Magna Carta and it became and remains the cornerstone of English Law. 14 May 1264 Henry III captured by Simon de Montfort at Lewes Update from Queen s Official Web Site 8 10 97. The Plantagenets Henry III Henry III reigned 12161272 , John s son, was only nine when he became king. By 1227, when he assumed power from his regent, order had been restored based on his acceptance of Magna Carta. However, the king s failed campaigns in France, his choice of foreigners as friends and advisers, together with the cost of his scheme to make one of his younger sons king of Sicily and help the Pope against the Holy Roman Emperor, led to further disputes with the barons and united opposition in Church and State. The Provisions of Oxford 1258 and the Provisions of Westminster 1259 were attempts by the nobles to curb the king s power, control appointments and set up an aristocratic council. Henry renounced the Provisions in 1264 and war broke out. The barons under their leader, Simon de Montfort, were initially successful, but Henry and his son, Edward, finally defeated and killed de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. Royal authority was restored by the Statute of Marlborough 1267 , in which the king also promised to uphold Magna Carta and some of the Provisions of Westminster. Additional Information Henry succeded his father, John, upon his father s death. At the time, Henry was only nine years old, and was placed under regency. William the Marshall became regent until his death in 1219, and Hugh de Burgh was regent until Henry came to the throne in 1227. Henry married Eleanor of Provence in 1236 and had four sons and two daughters. At the start of his reign, only the southwest and midlands of England were loyal to the king. The rebellious barons controlled the north, but they sided with Henry against the French Dauphin, who controlled the southeast of the island. The French were expelled by the Marshall in 1217. Henrys kingdom was poor, and he was forced to tax his nobles to finance wars that he was unable to win. As a result, Henry was forced to sell the claims to his Angevin possessions with the exception of Gascony and Calais. Henry s failures incited a baronial revolt led by his brother in law, Simon de Monfort. The rebellion lasted until de Monfort was killed by Henry s son, Edward, in 1265. When Henry refused to follow the Provisions of Oxford, he was summoned to the first Parliament. The Parliament agreed that the king be placed under the advice of a council for policy decisions. Henry is viewed as a political failure, but he was a cultural success. His reign defined the English monarchy as kingship limited by law. Henry died in 1272 after a reign of 56 years.
