1). Edmund was King of England only for a few months. Af t e r t h e death of his father, Ã?thelred II, in April 101 6 , Ed mun d l ed the defense of the city of London agains t t he in vadi ng K nut Sveinsson Canute , and was proclai me d king b y th e Lond oners. Meanwhile, the Witan Counci l , meetin g at So uthampt on, chose Canute as King. Aft e r a series o f inconcl usive mi litary engagements, in wh ic h Edmund perf ormed bril liantly a nd earned the nicknam e Ironside , h e defeated th e Danish f orces at Oxford , Kent , but was rou ted by Canute s forces a t Ashingdon , Essex . A subsequen t peace agreemen t was made , with Ed mund con trolling Wesse x and Canute cont rolling Mer cia a nd Northu mbria. It was a lso agreed that wh oever surviv e d the othe r would take con trol of the whole r ealm.
