Ande rson sa y s the refe rence here is to his father, Rev. Thom as Stoug ht on, a leadi ng light of Elizabethan Puritanis m who was s ile nced early i n the reign of King James I, a nd who spen t th e rest of hi s life producing theologica l pamphlets. S o w e are reasonabl y certain that the Rev . Thomas Stoughto n i s the correct anc estor for our Kathe rine Stoughton wh o mar ried John Wilcox , Jr. !For a time, it was uncertain whether the ancestry o f t h e R ev. Thomas Stoughton traces back through Franci s Stou gh ton . In TAG 29:4, p. 193, Ralph M.Stoughton, Esq . sugge ste d th at the father of the Rev. Thomas Stoughto n who mar rie d Kath erine was probably a John Stoughton an d not Fran ci s Stought on. However, new evidence found b y Genevieve T yle e Kiepura , published in TAG 33:105-112 , proves that Fr anci s Stoughto n is the correct father. !In the will of the Uncle of the Rev. Thomas Stoughton , T h o mas Stoughton of New Canterbury, Kent, 1591, ther e is m en ti on of "nephew Thomas Stoughton of Suffolk an d the tw o da ugh ters of Thomas Stoughton the minister. " (See TA G 33:10 5) !According to information sent to me by Robert T. Barr e t t , 694 Fasola Road, Sequim, Washington, 98382, the Re v . Th om as Stoughton was succeeded as rector at Naughton , S uffol k , England in July, 1694. It is not known wher e he s pen t hi s next six years, but he became Vicar of Co ggeshal l, E ssex , England on Dec. 12, 1600. He was remov ed fro m his n ew vi carage on Apr. 4, 1606, reason unknown . Accor ding t o inform ation in "Genealogies and Biographi es of An cient W indsor, " his second wife, Elizabeth who m he marrie d afte r the deat h of his first wife, Katherin e, in 1603 , remarri ed in 161 0 to William Knight of Linco ln. Their name s were E lizabeth, (w ho married son-in-law , Israel and wa s not name d in the wil l since Israel hims elf was executor ), William , John, Mary , and Ursuly (Ursu la). !In "The Great Migration Begins," Vol. III, 1775/6, i t s a y s that "several members of the family of Elizabet h Knig h t , wife of Israel Stoughton, also came to New Eng land, i nc lu ding her mother, the widow Elizabeth Knight ( who is t h e Eli zabeth of this particular individual recor d), her b ro ther , Rev. William Knight, and two other sist ers, Mary , wi fe o f Thomas Clark, and Ursula, wife of Dav id Yale. " Th e refer ence did not mention her other broth er, Joh n Knight. !One possible complication to the facts that have been s u m m aried above exists: Genevieve Tyles Kiepura, in TA G 33 :1 12 , claims that previous genealogists may have jum ped t o t h e faulty conclusion that Elizabeth, widow of th e Rev . Tho ma s Stoughton, was the one who married Willia m Knigh t. I n Ms . Kiepura's view, there is no other evi dence th an wha t wa s given in the will mentioned above fo r this co nclusio n an d futhermore, the known connection b etween Isr ael Stou ghto n and William Knight can be explai ned in anot her way . Her t heory is that it is not known f or sure tha t the Rev . Thoma s Stoughton even married a la dy named Eli zabeth. Wh oever to ok care of the young boy , Israel, name d in Willia m Knight' s will could easily ha ve been someon e else, and t hat the on ly connection to Wi lliam Knight wa s simply tha t Israel marr ied his daughter , Elizabeth, i n 1627, prior t o the completi on of his wil l in 1629/1630 . I think Ms. Ki epura's theor y is weak i n that she doe s not explain how yo ung Israel man aged t o meet William Kn ight's daughter whe n they were bor n s o far apart. If Isr ael lived in the sam e household wi t h his future wife, an d was not related to h er by bloo d in a ny way, it would se em natural for them t o become a cquainte d and eventually m arry. But, as I thin k of it , my reasonin g is weak also b ecause it does not exp lai n how his widowe d mother even me t Willaim Knight in t h e first place. Still , I am not rea dy yet to make any c han ges in this record fo r Elizabeth , since there are s o man y who believe her to b e the secon d wife of the Rev .
