General Notes for Child Isaac Johnson

Isaac Johnson is mentioned in the first chapter of Nat h a n i el Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" (set in 1647; p ub li sh e d 1850): "In accordance with this rule, it may s afe l y b e as sumed that the forefathers of Boston had bui lt t h e fir st pr ison-house, somewhere in the vicinity o f Corn hi ll, al most a s seasonably as they marked out th e firs t bur ial gro und, o n Isaac Johnson's lot, and roun d abou t his g rave, wh ich sub sequently became the nucleu s of al l the co ngregate d sepulch res in the old church-y ard of K ing's Cha pel."

The settlers of Massachusetts Bay Colony were of a dif f e r e nt type from the simon pure Puritan of the Plymout h C ol on y ; Endicott is and example.

In July 1629, Governor Cradock proposed to the com p a n y t o transfer the charter from England to the colon y , -- "t o th ose who shall inhabit there"---which lead t o a n ver y i mport ant increase in the number and the dist inct ion o f th e emigr ants.

A meeting of the company was called August 28, to di s c u s s the question of the removal, and on the next da y , i t w a s determined to be "the consent of the compan y th at t he g ov ernment patent should be settled in New E nglan d."

At a court of the company on October 20, 1629, Mr. J o h n W i nthrop was elected governor, and John Humphrey w a s el ect e d deputy governor, for New England.

At the last meeting of the company in England, on bo a r d t h e Arabella, March 23, 1630, Mr. Thomas Dudley wa s e le cte d d eputy governor, in place of Mr. Humprey, wh o ha d co nclu de d not to go at that time.

As a result of these operations, seventeen emigran t s h i p s with over one thousand passengers, left Englan d fo r t h e c olony, in 1630, of which fourteen sailed bef ore J une.

The principal persons were Sir Richard Saltonstall , I s a a c Johnson, and his wife Lady Arabella, sister t o th e Ea r l o f Lincoln, John Winthrop, and Thomas Dudley . The se em ba rke d on the ship Arabella, named after th e Lady A rabell a J ohns on.

The emigrants included many persons of high characte r , w e a lth and learning, among them were four non-confor mi st m in is ters. It was by far the most important expedi tio n tha t h a d ever left England for America.

More that two hundred of the emigrants, including La d y J o h nson and her husband, died before December 1630 , fr om h ar ds hips to which they were not inured.
