During the campaign of 1853, James Odell and John Spurgin were candidates for representative. Odell represented the anti-temperance sentiment. The real issue, however, was a row of cherry trees- These trees were on the Spurgin farm and grew along a roadside and the public each year came and helped themselves to the crop. This tresspassing soon became a muisance and the trees were cut down. This incident Odell used with a telling effect, relating how Spurgin deprived the poor people of his cherries--how he cut the trees down rather than let them have any. Odell was elected more because of the cherry tree story than his anti-temperance platform. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- Muddy Creek Church first appears on the Baptist association minutes in 1862 and was represented by James and John Spurgin.

Very active in Muddy Creek Baptist Church, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.
He was conscripted into the Confererate Army-records indicate he enrolled at Knoxville Tennessee on 24 Nov., 1862-family tradition says he was forced to join at his farm in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He was a private in Co G 19 Regiment of Tennessee-he was captured Nov 25, 1863 at Missionary Ridge and sent to prison at Rock Island Illinois. While in prison he wrote to the Secretary of War stating he wanted to take the oath of allegience to the United States and become a loyal citizen. He further states that he threw his gun down, came across the line, and reported as a desserter. He was informed that the oath would be given when he arrived in Nashville, Tennessee but this was not permitted and he was sent to Rock Island prison. He enlisted in the Union Army on 6 Oct 1864 (Co B 2nd U.S. Volunteer Infantry) and served on the "frontier" guarding Indians in Kansas. He was mustered out Nov. 7, 1865. He returned to Sullivan Co., Tennessee & lived there until his wife died. Shortly after her death he moved with his 8 living children to Kansas--he moved with his daughter Mollie to Oklahoma Territory and lived with her until his death.

Bessie Butcher, 6/20/99 said that Geo. M. Peer's breakfast always consisted of a bowl of oats --the kind fed his animals--and milk. He would go to the barn and get the oats from the anima l's feed.

He was a very thrifty person.
He would always have a plug of tobacco in his mouth.
He saw a need for a store in his vicinity, so opened one and did well with it.
When he could no longer run his farm, he sold it and moved to town. He was always unhappy the re. He moved to several places, and finally bought a two-story home at the edge of the countr y, just a little beyond where Charles and Lottie had their Main St. home. He was much happie r there.
The George Peer farm was where the Rex-Cem Plant is now. (1999) On down-where the golf cours e was-was the Durbin farm. Just before that was the little house where Charlie and Lottie fir st lived.
George Peer's house was on the river side of the road, and the big barn was up on a hill acro ss the road.
This was sent by Charles Richman to unknown recipient. "Perhaps you both have read this poe m but to be written by a farmer like grand pap Peer I think it is very impressive and I lik e to read it often.

Bessie Butcher, 6/20/99, said that Geo. M. was always very thrifty (or tight) with money. H e didn't give his wife any spending money, but did give her a pair of horses which she coul d breed and sell the colts. She did well with this, as well as selling eggs. She would keep t he money she had behind pictures throughout the house. When she died, Bessie says Lottie Pee r said the family had quite a time looking behind photos for all the money, and they foun d a considerable amount.
