General Notes (Husband)
Annotated Federal Census info for the Sellers family of NC Lincoln, Cleveland, and Macon Counties All comments in parentheses are my commentary, and merely represent my guesses on the identities of the people involved. In addition, the census (especially in the early years) was notoriously inaccurate, and the handwriting of census takers is often hard to decipher. Be warned.

MINDY'S PAGE Mindy Green bonanza@nc.rr.com (March, 2001) http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/sellers.html
My name is Mindy Green and I am descended from George Sellers (1755/56-1839)of PA and Lincoln Co., NC. On your Lincoln County page you quote from my website at http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/sellers.html
I was wondering if you would mind putting a link to my site on the page, before or after the quote so people can find out about updates and more information. You could also list my new email address at bonanza@nc.rr.com (it's recently changed.) You also might be interested to see the two Sellers wills I have transcribed. They're available from http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/will.html
I hope to have some new info up soon. I recently found the (much-overgrown) Froneberger cemetery where George Sellers and some of his family are buried. Here are some of my observations about what I found:
According to the IGI, George Sellers (1756-1839) was married three times; first to Susannah Best (?d. before 1809, mother of George Jr, John, Philip, Henry, and Caty among others), second to Magdalena Schneider (who he married in PA, mother of Felix), and third, debatedly, to Anna Mary Froneberger.
My info is from a woman I met over the internet, who was a descendant of Felix. She had done a lot of research and had info to back it up, but unfortunately when my hard drive perished I lost all the emails we had exchanged, and her snail and email addresses. I'm pretty sure I have a printout somewhere, but I'll have to dig. In any case, according to her, George was married twice; to Susannah Best and Magdalena Schneider, and his son George actually married Anna Mary Froneberger. They had one son Philip who was raised by his uncle Philip after George Jr's death (presumably in 1825 or thereabouts.) She believes that Eli and siblings were actually the children of John Sellers and Mary Rush.
With all that in mind we went to the Froneberger cemetery. In a line are Barbara Sellers, Philip Sellers, Susannah Sellers, George Sellers, Anna M. Sellers, and a small stone that reads C. Sellers. Barbara and Philip's graves are similar and the dates support our belief that this is George Sr's son Philip and his wife Barbara Froneberger. Susannah and
George's stones are identical as befits a husband and wife, and are also signed by the carver, WNC. His reads: In memory of George Sellers died Dec. 3rd 1839 aged 83 years, which fits with everything we know about him. Hers however was a surprise. It says she died Jan 19, 1843, aged 83
years. (The four in 1843 was hard to read, but we rubbed it and you can definitely see the angle and the crossbar of a "4".) If this really is Susannah Best, as I believe it is, then George Sr. cannot (legally) have married either Magdalena Schneider, or Anna Mary Froneberger!
Anna Mary Froneberger's stone is in fact next to George Sr's, but on it's other side is C. Sellers, died May 22 1836 (or 1830 - the stone is very poorly carved). This is the only other Sellers buried there except for an Eli F Sellers, who I think may have been a child. What if the C. (with a period very close to the bottom of the "C") was actually a G? And this is George Sellers, Jr? The dates aren't right, but I don't think we ever knew his death date with any certainty.
Coming at it from another angle, Anna Mary's headstone reads born Jan 3 1793 died Nov 22 1869, so in 1850 she would have been 57 years old. However, in the 1850 Cleveland Co census, Eli (age 30) appears living with his brothers and his mother, Mary, age 50. It's just another reason to believe Anna Mary was not Eli's mother.
I hope this is of interest. Any light you can shed on all this would be much appreciated.

Roswell Elmer was the editor of the North Carolina Spectator and Western Advertiser, a weekly newspaper published in Rutherfordton, N.C., first on Fridays and later on Saturdays. It began publication in 1830, shortly after Elmer set up his press, and seems to have ceased in 1835 or 1836. Late in its run, the Spectator adopted the motto: "Cherish every measure which may foster our brotherly Union, and perpetuate a Constitution of Government destined to be the primitive and precious model of what is to change the condition of man over the globe" (Jefferson).
In a February 1835 issue, the following notice appeared. Among the signatories were men who were involved in underwriting the purchase of the press and the first order of printing supplies.
To Printers:
The publication of the North Carolina Spectator and
Western Advertiser and the printing business connected
with it for some time under Editorial management of Mr.
Roswell Elmer, Jr., being about to be relinquished by him,
for some other pursuit, it becomes necessary to engage the
service of another competent individual, to take charge of
the concern. ... [The Spectator has now a quite
respectable list of subscribers, and an extensive and
profitable circle of job work. ... It may not be amiss to
say that the political course and principles hitherto
supported by the Spectator have been those of the
"Jeffersonian school" and it is believed a majority of
this community entertaining the same principles, would be
more likely to patronize a continuance than a departure
from them.

He was drowned in the Second Broad River, August 4th, 1838, aged 30 years, 2 months and 25 days. his remains lie in honor beneath a marble shaft, the tribute of a noble-heated woman to the man who adored her while he lived, and marks the spot where rests he lover and her love. Judge William H. Battle knew Mr. Dews at Chapel Hill and often spoke of his talents and his genius. Toward the close of an address before the literary societies at the commencement of 1865, growing reminiscent, Judge Battle said: " I will occupy a few more moments of your time in recalling from the dim recollections of the past the names of a few men, each of whom was well-regarded as a college genius of the day, and who with well-directed energies, and a longer life might have left a name the world would not willingly let die. In the year 1824 Thomas Dews, a young man from the county of Lincoln, took his degree of Bachelor of Arts, dividing with Prof. Sims, Judge Manly and ex-governor Graham the highest honor of the class. His parents were poor, and it is said resorted to the humble occupation of selling cakes for the purpose of procuring means for the education of their promising boy. After graduation, he studied law and commenced the practice with every prospect of eminent success, when unhappily, a morbid sensitiveness of temperament drove him to habits of intemperance, during one of the fits he came to an untimely end. His name, which ought to have gone down to posterity on account of the great deeds achieved by extraordinary talents, will probably be remembered only in connection with a happily-turned impromptu epitaph". Yet it has gone down in history immortalized by his neighbor and friend, Col. James R. Dodge, a distinguished practitioner for many years at the Lincolnton bar. Colonel Dodge was a son of Gen. Richard Dodge and Sarah Ann Dodge, his mother being the sister of Washington Irving, of New York. Those acquainted with the playful writings of Washington Irving will not be surprised at the spontaneous retort of his nephew. But one residence separated the Dews home from that of colonel Dodge in Lincolnton. At April term. 1832 of Rutherford Superior Court, David L. Swain, afterwards Governor, was on the bench and in the bar were Samuel Hillman, Tom Dews and Mr. Dodge. While Mr. dodge was addressing the jury, Judge Swain recalled a punning epitaph on a man named Dodge, wrote it on a piece of paper, and passed it around to the merriment of the bar; and when Colonel Dodge had finished his speech, he found it lying on his table:
" Epitaph of James R. Dodge, Esq., Attorney-At-Law
"Here lies a Dodge, who dodged all good,
And dodged a deal of evil,
Who after dodging all he could,
He could not dodge the Devil."
Mr. Dodge read the paper, turned it over and wrote on the other side:
"Epitaph of Three Attorneys"
"Here lies a Hillman and a Swain,
Whose lot let no man choose;
They lived in sin and died in pain,
And the Devil got his Dews."(dues)
