BIO: One of the marriage indexes for Claiborne County records a marriage for Jonathon ODELL to Elizabeth KECK, 20 OCT 1877. (Marriage Book #4, p. 310). [SEP 9, 1996: Letter and Family Group sheets were sent to Marjorie Walsh, a grand daughter of Jonathon O'DELL. Ms. Walsh has given a marriage date of 20 OCT 1876 for Jonathon and Elizabeth. The source is not given, but may have been family records.] Apparently this son of Marshall and Serena O'DELL remained in Claiborne County and owned considerable property. Contact with Marjorie WALSH, a descendent of Jonathan's, indicates that Jonathan and David O'DELL were twins. David died in childhood; there is a tombstone in the Hopper Cemetery in Claiborne County from which compiler was only able to read the first initial and the last name, "D O'DELL." It was assumed that this is the grave of David, Jonathon's twin. Another descendent of Jonathan's, Ben L. O'DELL, of Johnson City, TN, has provided compiler with three obituaries for Jonathan and a note of thanks from Jonathan's widow which were photocopied from 1916 Tennessee newspapers. Compiler also found an article written by Ben L. O'DELL on the "History of Washington County, TN, 1988". The following has been taken from Ben's article: "...One of Marshall's sons, Jonathan O'DELL, (1857-1916) was my grandfather. He married Sarah Elizabeth KECK. They are buried (at) New Tazewell, Tennessee. They had twelve children... When the Southern Railroad was built from Knoxville, Tenn. to Middlesboro, Kentucky, the people of Tazewell opposed the railroad's proposed route through Tazewell. My grandfather, Jonathan O'DELL, donated the land for a depot site and the Southern Railroad built a switch called Claud's Switch, and the train entered the new depot in reverse. The settlement around this depot became known as New Tazewell, Tennessee. It was built on and near his farm. Jonathan O'DELL also gave the land for the first Negro Church at New Tazewell..." ******************************* JONATHAN ODDELL DEAD

Was a pioneer and Progressive Citizen of New Tazewell Died Monday night, March 20, 1916, at his home in New Tazewell, Jonathan Odell, Esq., in the 58th year of a useful and active life. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and five sons, to whom we extend sincerest synpathy in their sad bereavement. The deceased had been a sufferer from Bright's Disease for several years. By the death of Jonathan Odell New Tazewell has sustained a decided distinct loss. He was a pioneer, one of the very first to locate there when the town was started is 1888. Though not endowed with great financial wealth, he was nevertheless a promoter and a developer, and a successful one. He built and caused to be built more houses than any other two or three men in the town. He had been important in attracting the attention of capitalists to the mineral resources of this section. He was constitutionally a booster, an apostle of sunshine. Sleep in peace, departed friend, for you have earned eternal rest. ********************************

IN MEMORIAM Jonathan O'DELL departed this life March 20, 1916, at his home in New Tazewell, Tenn., after a painful and lingering illness. All that medical skill could do was without avail. ...His faithful and devoted wife, ever ready to do what she could at all times, stood around his bed to the end, and prostrated with grief had to have the care of her loving children and friends to save the mother. No man was more devoted to his family than he. Always ready to provide and do what he could for their comfort. May his family be always united, and as did their father, provide for the wants of mother... Mr. O'Dell was 58 years 6 months and 6 days old when he died. He was the father of 12 children, nine of whom survive: Oscar, John L., Walter, LaFayette, George and Clay are the boys now living. The girls are Misses Bess, Mayme and Bird. The floral offering by friends were many and very beautiful. Business was suspended while all assembled at the O'Dell residence, and with loving hands bore their friend to the cemetery where last sad rites were performed and they laid to rest the body of their departed friend and neighbor. His attending physician, Dr. J.C. Carr, called in consultation Drs. Francisco, M.B. Carr and others. May the children live In hope that sends a shining ray Far down the future's broadening way In peace that only thou cans't give With Thee, O, Master, let them live. ****************************************

JONATHAN O'DELL Special to the Knoxville Sentinel NEW TAZEWELL, March 23--Jonathan O'Dell, aged 69 years, died at his home here Monday afternoon. He is survived by a widow, five sons and three daughters, John, of Chattanooga; Oscar, of Chicago, LaFayette, of Cumberland Gap; Walter, Georgia and Cloy, of this place and Misses Bess, Mayme and Birdie, of this place. Mr. O'Dell was a popular man, favorably known in Claiborne as well as the adjoining counties and in other states. He was the first man to erect a building in New Tazewell and has remained here since. Mr. O'Dell has been very much interested in mineral lands for several years. He was a man who will be greatly missed by many outside the immedite family. Funeral services were conducted at the O'Dell home Tuesday afternoon and interment was at Oak Grove cemetery.

NOTE: There are some typo errors and disagreement in ages in the obituaries. They have been copied as nearly like they appeared in the photocopies as possible. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Ben L. O'DELL of Johnson City, TN, a descendent of Jonathan and Sarah Elizabeth KECK O'DELL, has provided a pedigree chart which shows the parents and the birth and death dates of Elizabeth. He also supplied the first name, Sarah. According to Ben O'DELL and information found in three obituaries for Jonathan, Elizabeth and Jonathan had twelve children, nine of whom were still living when Jonathan died in 1916. Compiler has not found data for all twelve as of July, 1996. Ben O'DELL has provided a photocopy of the following newspaper clipping: CARD OF THANKS ************ New Tazewell, Tenn. March 23, 1916 Editor Progress, Tazewell, Tenn. We wish to express our sincere thanks for the many deeds of kindness shown us during the sickness and death of our dear husband and father. Also for the many beautiful floral offerings. Mrs. Jonathan ODELL and children

One of the three obituaries sent by Ben O'DELL spoke of Jonathan's wife.. "...His faithful and devoted wife, ever ready to do what she could at all times, stood around his bed to the end, and prostrated with grief had to have the care of her loving children and friends to save the mother..." The burial place of Jonathan and Elizabeth is somewhat uncertain. Ben O'DELL writes in his article that they are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in New Tazewell; the cemetery index by JOHNSON, however, refers to this as Oaks Cemetery at New Tazewell, 500 feet west of the Farmer's Co-op. This may be the same cemetery but that is not confirmed. The "KECK" name appears often in the Civil War Pension File of Sarah EDWARDS and Marshall L. O'DELL, the parents of Jonathan. P.F. KECK signed as Justice of the Peace on Marshall's Declaration for Invalid Pension in July, 1890. M.C. KECK gave an affidavit on behalf of Sarah EDWARDS O'DELL in her attempts to obtain a widow's pension in January, 1910. In September, 1916, Eli KECK, N.P., notarized Sarah's letter to the Pension Board, request in an increase in her pension. These were all probably family members of Sarah Elizabeth KECK's. Compiler found the parents and siblings of Sarah on the 1850 Census for Claiborne County, TN. Sarah's grandfather, John KECK, Sr. and an uncle, Matthew KECK were counted in a home about four households from that of Sarah's parents. Sept. 1996: Letter and Family Group sheets for Sarah KECK and Jonathon O'DELL were sent to compiler by Marjorie Walsh, grand daughter of the couple. Per Ms. Walsh, the O'DELL's were married 20 OCT 1876 rather than 1877. Ms. Walsh also provided a middle name for the mother of Sarah KECK and a nick-name for her father, John KECK, Jr. The WFT disk recorded the entire family of "John Guider KECK" and Rebecca Asbury (YADON). No data was given on this disk for Sarah Elizabeth except for her year of birth and an "estimated death" between "1860-1953.

Marjorie WALSH 4309 W. Atlantic - Apt. 917; Coconut Creek, FL 33066 (Desc. of Jonathan O'DELL)

BIO: Oscar was named in two obituaries as one of the surviving children of Jonathan O'Dell, who died 20 MAR 1916. The obituary from the "Knoxville Sentinel" states the Oscar was living in Chicago. Compiler found several of the family graves recorded in "Cemeteries of Claiborne County, TN" by Paul JOHNSON. Oscar was one of those listed. Close to his grave is one for "Maggie JONES O'DELL 1181-1925". This is the wife of Oscar L., per the report of Marjorie Walsh. Ms. Walsh gave "Silver Point" as the place of this marriage; compiler was unable to locate "Silver Point" on the map of TN in the 1996 Rand-McNally Road Atlas, so no county can be identified. Oscar appeared as one year of age on the 1880 census for Claiborne Co.; he was the only child in the household of Jonathon and "Sarah E. ODELL".

One is headed "Special to the Knoxville Sentinel," the source of the other is not cited, but it probably comes from a Tazewll, Tn Newspaper. Copies provided by Ben L. O'DELL, 1808 N. REF: 1. Obituaries: Jonathan O'DELL, Father, 1916. Two obituaries name Walter Sherman as one of the surviving sons of J. O'DELL. One is headed "Special to the Knoxvill Sentinel," the other source is not cited, but may have been a Tazewell newspaper. (Photocopies provided by Ben L. O'DELL, 1808 N. Marjorie WALSH, 4309 W Atlantic -Apt. 917, Coconut Creek, FL 33066 (Desc. of Jonathan O'DELL)

BIO: Compiler has taken some liberties in doing some "educated guesswork". Walter was listed as a surviving son of Jonathan in 1916. Walter was living in the Tazewell area at the time. Compiler copied a series of O'DELL tombstones from the library in Tazewell in 1995. Among those copied were Jonathan and Elizabeth KECK O'DELL's. In the same cemetery, compiler found "Walter S. O'DELL and close to his grave "Mellie K. WHEELER O'DELL." Compiler has made the assumption that this is the son of Jonathan and the son's wife. Near these two graves is another for "Alan R. O'DELL, b. 08 JAN 1913-d. 06 JAN 1914." This is probably a child of Walter and Mellie's. The next grave is that of Jonathan, Walter's father. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED

They lived at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Benjamin Lafayette O'DELL retired from the L & N Railway as train dispatcher. " Two obituaries for Jonathan O'DELL name this son of Jonathan as "LaFayette". One of the obituaries makes mention of his residence in Cumberland Gap, TN. Paul JOHNSON, in his compilation of the Claiborne Co. cemeteries, gives Benjamin Lafayette's date of death as 12 JUN 1957. Marjorie WHEELER, a cousin of Ben Long O'DELL's added the information that Benj. Lafayette died in London, KY.
